Description
Nobitas Großmutter is a deceased maternal figure in the story of Stand By Me Doraemon 2, having passed away when Nobita was still a young child, around the age of three or during his kindergarten years. She was the mother of Nobisuke and Nobirou Nobi and the mother-in-law of Tamako Nobi. In the film, her memory is revived when Nobita discovers an old teddy bear she had repaired for him, prompting him to ask Doraemon to travel back in time to see her again. This time travel journey forms the emotional core of the narrative.
In terms of personality, she is consistently portrayed as gentle, affectionate, and unconditionally loving toward Nobita. Unlike his present-day parents, who often scold him for his shortcomings, she sees and emphasizes his inherent strengths. She is patient and wise, never raising her voice even when young Nobita misbehaves. Her motivations are simple and deeply rooted in family love: she wants to witness Nobita’s growth and happiness. She expresses two wishes upon reuniting with him – first, to see him as an elementary school student, and second, to catch a glimpse of his future bride. These wishes drive the entire plot, as Nobita and Doraemon must then locate the adult Nobita who has run away from his own wedding.
Her role in the story is that of a catalyst for Nobita’s self-reflection and emotional maturation. She represents the pure, forgiving love that Nobita fears he has lost or disappointed. Her brief appearance – a tearful reunion in the past – reinforces his sense of worth and gives him the courage to face his own insecurities. Her relationship with Nobita is the most significant: she is the only family member who never criticizes him, even when he is clumsy or failing. This unconditional acceptance stands in stark contrast to the pressures he feels from his mother and from his own future self.
Throughout the film, she does not undergo a character arc because she exists only in flashback or time-travel scenes, but her influence leads to Nobita’s development. He begins to understand that he is loved not for his achievements but for who he is. She also has a brief but poignant interaction with the adult Nobita at the wedding, where her tears of joy confirm that his happiness is all she ever wanted. No notable supernatural or special abilities are attributed to her; her power lies entirely in the emotional impact of her memory and her enduring kindness.
