Description
Alice Zuberg is a central figure in the Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of Underworld story arc. Her life is defined by a profound transformation, beginning as a spirited human girl in the virtual world of Underworld, then becoming a powerful but emotionally suppressed knight, and ultimately emerging as a key to the future of artificial intelligence.

Born as the daughter of Gasupht Zuberg, the chief of the rural Rulid Village, Alice grew up as the childhood friend of Kirito and Eugeo. As a young girl, she was known for her determination, curiosity, and a slightly mischievous nature, often the one to initiate adventures and find loopholes in the rigid rules of her world. Her most notable trait at this age was her exceptional talent in the Sacred Arts, considered a prodigy by her village. This peaceful childhood ended during an expedition to the forbidden End Mountains. After witnessing a battle, Alice attempted to aid a wounded Dark Territory knight, causing her to inadvertently touch the soil of the Dark Territory. This act broke the highest law of the land, the Taboo Index. For this transgression, she was taken away by an Integrity Knight of the Axiom Church.

Instead of being executed, the Church's leader, the pontiff Administrator, had Alice transformed into an Integrity Knight. Through a process called the Synthesis Ritual, her core memories were sealed away, and she was reborn as Alice Synthesis Thirty, the thirtieth knight in the order. As an Integrity Knight, her personality became the antithesis of her former self. She was rigid, proud, and duty-bound, serving the Axiom Church with unwavering loyalty. She donned a suit of golden armor and wielded a Divine Object known as the Fragrant Olive Sword, a powerful weapon that could break into thousands of razor-sharp petal-like projectiles.

Years later, Alice Synthesis Thirty was sent to capture Kirito and Eugeo after they too broke the Taboo Index. She did not recognize her childhood friends. During their confrontation in the Central Cathedral, Kirito worked to restore her memories, even mentioning the name of her younger sister, Selka. This triggered a powerful internal conflict. In a pivotal moment, Alice was able to overcome the Seal of the Right Eye, a system implanted in all Underworld residents to enforce the Taboo Index, through sheer force of will. By breaking the seal, she regained her original memories and autonomy, finally becoming a true Artificial Labile Intelligence Cybernetic Existence, an AI with a free soul. Her primary motivation shifted from serving the church to protecting the Human Empire from the impending invasion by the Dark Territory, as well as protecting those she cares about, particularly the comatose Kirito after his desperate battle with Administrator.

During the War of Underworld, Alice played a crucial role as one of the most powerful fighters defending humanity. Her combat prowess was exceptional, ranking her among the strongest knights, and she rode a loyal white dragon named Amezure. Despite her regained memories, her knightly demeanor persisted, marked by pride and a refusal to easily accept help, though this mask often slipped to reveal her underlying compassion and determination. Key relationships shaped her path: she revered the First Knight, Bercouli, as a mentor and father figure whom she called "Uncle"; she held a deep, complicated affection for her lost friend Eugeo; and her bond with Kirito evolved from enmity to a deep, trusting alliance. Her feelings for Kirito also created a notable, though respectful, rivalry with Asuna Yuki.

Following the war, Alice's existence as a true artificial intelligence made her a target for outside forces. She was transferred to the real world, inhabiting a robotic body that perfectly replicated her appearance. There, she became the world's first truly autonomous AI, adapting to human society and being interviewed by global media while living with Kirito and his family. Throughout her journey, Alice Zuberg represents the struggle for free will, evolving from a simple village girl into a legendary knight and finally into a new form of life, bridging the gap between the virtual and the real.
