Description
Buddy Waters is a NASA astronaut who serves as a member of the manned asteroid exploration crew known as Swetts. His career includes participation in the CES-51 mission to the moon in 2026 alongside Hibito and other crew members. Subsequently, he was assigned to the first human asteroid exploration mission, scheduled to depart around 2031.
Physically, Buddy is characterized by his well-trained, muscular build and notably long eyelashes. His personality is defined by a deep emotional warmth and strong sense of camaraderie. He is a good-natured individual who forms strong bonds with his colleagues, acting as a true friend and understanding companion to Hibito. Despite his imposing physique, he has a sensitive side and is prone to crying, particularly in emotional situations. For example, he was weeping even before a letter from the late astronaut Brian was read aloud, and Brian himself had predicted that Buddy would be crying in such a moment.
Underneath his tough exterior, Buddy also displays a somewhat anxious and cautious nature. On the moon, when it was time to remove his spacesuit for the first time, he hesitated out of concern about potential gas hazards and suggested that his colleague Freddy, whom he calls Captain, should go first. His worry becomes evident during high-pressure situations, such as when Hibito and another astronaut faced a lunar accident. While rushing to their rescue, Buddy became so anxious that he accelerated their vehicle too quickly, needing to be reminded by Freddy to stay calm to avoid causing another accident. Throughout the tense rescue operation, he fidgeted with a coin, unable to settle down until he found Hibito and, with tears of joy, witnessed his friend safely stand and give a peace sign after receiving oxygen.
Buddy's motivation is deeply rooted in his relationships with his fellow astronauts. He feels a profound sense of loyalty and care for his crewmates, and his actions are consistently driven by this emotional connection. He was appointed as a backup crew member for training alongside Hibito and another astronaut, where he often looked after Hibito, who was on his first spaceflight. Drawing from his own experience of getting sick on his early flights, Buddy offered Hibito a motion sickness bag during their journey to the moon. He is also enthusiastic about sharing space with the public, having served as a guide for a virtual moon tour program where he notably ate fried silkworm chrysalises.
His key relationships include a strong bond with Hibito, whom he supports and eventually rescues. He shares a close dynamic with fellow astronaut Freddy, whom he respects as captain, and with another crew member named Damien. One of the most significant influences on Buddy is the astronaut Brian. Buddy learned several practical and personal skills from Brian, including a trick for removing a spacesuit in eighteen seconds, how to soothe family members during business trips, good excuses for breaking machinery, and how to give comments that appeal to the media. Brian affectionately called Buddy muscle brain. The memory of Brian, including a Brian doll that was the source of a mysterious light on the moon, remains a powerful and emotional part of Buddy's life.
Buddy's development throughout the story shows him growing as a reliable astronaut while retaining his emotional core. His experience rescuing Hibito demonstrates his ability to channel his strong feelings into decisive, life-saving action under extreme duress. He is also present, alongside other close colleagues, to observe Hibito's reinstatement examination to return to active duty as an astronaut, having been determined to be there on that specific day. Notable abilities include his extensive experience with multiple space missions prior to CES-51, practical knowledge of spaceflight operations, and a great fondness for and knowledge of UFOs and related phenomena, claiming to have seen one himself in the past.
