TV-Series
Description
Nobisuke Nobi is the father of Nobita Nobi and the husband of Tamako Nobi in the Doraemon series. He works as a typical salaryman, commuting to an ordinary office job each day, and represents the modest middle-class Japanese father of his era. His childhood took place during World War II, a period that shaped his early experiences. As an adult, Nobisuke is a gentle, easygoing, and kind-hearted man, often displaying a patient and understanding demeanor that contrasts with his wife’s stricter approach to discipline. He shares several personality traits with his son, including a laid-back nature, a tendency toward clumsiness, and a lack of skill in sports and manual tasks. His memory is poor, he is not academically gifted—having frequently scored zeros on tests as a child—and he has repeatedly failed to obtain a driver’s license despite many attempts. He also struggles with habits such as smoking, which he has tried to quit numerous times without success, and he enjoys drinking alcohol, sometimes becoming heavily drunk at social gatherings.

Despite his ordinary career and unremarkable achievements, Nobisuke carries himself with quiet dignity and a sense of responsibility. He cares deeply for his family and serves as an emotional anchor in the Nobi household, often mediating conflicts between Nobita and Tamako with calm reasoning rather than raised voices. He is supportive of his son and believes in Nobita’s inherent goodness, offering gentle guidance during casual moments such as watching television or fishing together. His parenting style emphasizes patience and quiet wisdom, and he occasionally shares stories from his own childhood to teach valuable lessons.

One of Nobisuke’s most notable traits is his lifelong passion for painting. In his youth, he was a skilled artist who dreamed of becoming a professional painter and even won awards for his work. He received training from a teacher who later became famous, and he once had the opportunity to marry into wealth and study abroad to pursue painting as a career. However, he chose to forgo that path, insisting that life must be carved out by one’s own efforts, a decision that led him to meet and marry Tamako. He continues to paint as a hobby in his spare time. Other hobbies include fishing, though his skill is limited, and golf, at which he is also not particularly proficient. He enjoys watching baseball and golf on television, supports the Yomiuri Giants, has an interest in music and once purchased expensive audio equipment, and occasionally plays pachinko or buys lottery tickets. He also has a habit of nagging.

In his role within the story, Nobisuke is a stabilizing presence who frequently arrives home from work to soothe tensions and offers a sympathetic ear to Nobita. He fully accepts Doraemon as a member of the family, treating the robot cat with the same warmth and care he shows his biological son, and sometimes seeks Doraemon’s opinions on matters. His relationship with Tamako is built on mutual respect, with his patient nature complementing her more assertive personality to create a balanced family dynamic. Over the course of the series, Nobisuke does not undergo dramatic development but remains a consistently reliable and loving father, occasionally showing frustration or disappointment that makes him realistically flawed and relatable. His notable abilities include his painting talent and his capacity for quiet, effective communication that helps guide his son through life’s challenges.
