Description
King Hiryuu, also known as the Crimson Dragon King, is the foundational figure of the Kouka Kingdom in the anime and manga series Akatsuki no Yona. He is a legendary being who originally descended from the heavens as a dragon god but chose to take on human form to live among the people of the earth. His decision to become human is the central act that defines his character and the entire history of the kingdom.
Physically, King Hiryuu is remembered as a thin man of average height. His most distinctive features, which become a crucial link to his legacy, are his long, wavy red hair and his amethyst eyes. These traits are later echoed in his reincarnation, Princess Yona, whose own red hair marks her as his successor.
The personality of King Hiryuu is described as kind, loving, and remarkably forgiving. He is defined by his deep, almost inexplicable love for humanity. Even when the people of his time, having forgotten the gods, became full of hatred and evil, and even when they turned against him, he bore them no ill will. He was captured by power-hungry humans and faced destruction, yet he continued to love them for who they were. He believed that the capacity for hate and betrayal is an inherent part of being human, and he accepted it without resentment. This sets him apart from his fellow dragon gods, who wanted to destroy the unfaithful humans and return to heaven.
The history of Kouka begins when the human world fell into ruin. King Hiryuu, now in human form, was forced to fight against those who sought power. At his moment of greatest peril, four other dragon gods—the original White, Blue, Green, and Yellow Dragons—descended to his aid. These dragons, who loved him, offered him their power by granting their blood to four human warriors, commanding them to protect and never betray King Hiryuu. With the help of these first Dragon Warriors, he succeeded in clearing the kingdom of evil.
After this great task was complete, the red dragon spirit within King Hiryuu grew tired and fell asleep, leading to his death. Before he passed, he had a son named Yak-Shi, who would succeed him on the throne and was devastated by his father's death. In his final days, he showed great care for those who served him, particularly the Yellow Dragon, Zeno. Upon witnessing Zeno's power of immortality, King Hiryuu was distraught at having underestimated him. As a token of his gratitude and a keepsake for the centuries to come, he gave Zeno a golden Dragon Crest, which Zeno treasures deeply.
Regarding abilities, King Hiryuu was described by the immortal Zeno as "just another human," which implies that after his descent from the heavens, he held no extraordinary supernatural powers. His true power was not physical or magical but was his limitless compassion, his capacity for forgiveness, and his deep understanding of human nature. He did not possess the divine strength he once had, but his love for humanity was the force that built a kingdom. His legacy is the foundation of Kouka, and the story of the present is driven by the fact that his soul reincarnated in Princess Yona. The four Dragon Warriors' blood reacts to her presence, compelling them to uphold their ancestors' oath to protect her, just as they protected the first King Hiryuu two thousand years before.
