Description
Haruno Takaragi is a first-year high school student who serves as the vice class president of Umika Konohoshi's class. She becomes a core member of the Rocketry Research Association, the school club formed by the main characters with the ambitious goal of building rockets to reach space. She is initially drawn to the group after encountering Umika and Yuu Akeuchi at an abandoned lighthouse, a location that holds deep personal significance for her as her grandfather was its former caretaker, and she holds the key to its basement.

On the surface, Haruno presents a consistently cheerful, warm, and optimistic demeanor. She is deeply considerate of others, treating everyone with kindness and fairness without questioning the more eccentric claims of her friends, such as Yuu's assertion of being an alien. Her helpful and level-headed nature makes her a stabilizing force within the group, handling tasks like documentation and promotion while mediating minor conflicts. This calm and friendly exterior initially gives the impression of a character who is simply supportive but perhaps less complex than her peers.

However, this persistent cheerfulness is revealed to be a mask, a deliberate strategy to avoid emotional commitment. Haruno's personality is deeply shaped by a painful event from her childhood. She was close friends with a girl named Megumi, with whom she practiced piano. When Haruno's natural talent became evident, Megumi, who dreamed of becoming a great pianist, gave up the instrument, leaving Haruno wracked with guilt. She felt responsible for destroying her friend's dream. In the aftermath, her kindly grandfather offered her a new purpose: if she could not have a dream of her own, she could instead become the kind of person who encourages and helps others pursue theirs. Haruno took this advice to heart, but she never felt she truly succeeded because she was too afraid to share in the dream itself, remaining a perpetually cheerful but uninvested observer.

This fear of commitment and her past trauma manifest as a reluctance to wholeheartedly love or dedicate herself to any single passion. Her long ribbon becomes a visual symbol of this restraint, representing the emotional bonds and past hurt that hold her back. Her motivation to join the Rocketry Research Association and to keep the group together is therefore complex. While she genuinely enjoys the camaraderie and wants to support her friends, she initially keeps an emotional distance, afraid of becoming too invested and causing another disaster. Her arc involves learning to shed this protective shell, to risk personal disappointment, and to admit that she truly wants to be an active participant in the club's successes and failures.

Throughout the story, Haruno's key relationships are instrumental to her development. Her bond with the shy protagonist Umika and the alien Yuu is a catalyst for her change; their sincere and unfiltered approaches to their dreams help her realize the value of being more honest about her own desires. Her most pivotal relationship is with the abrasive and solitary mechanic, Matataki Raimon. While Haruno usually mediates conflicts, when Matataki's self-loathing causes her to quit the club and lash out at others, Haruno drops her cheerful facade and confronts her directly. She expresses genuine anger, telling Matataki she hates seeing her act like a loser, demonstrating a real emotional investment she had previously avoided. This confrontation is a key moment in her development, proving she has finally become capable of truly sharing in the difficult parts of another person's dream.

In terms of abilities and role, Haruno is not a technical genius like Matataki nor does she possess Yuu's telepathy. Her strength lies in her organizational skills, social intelligence, and surprising hidden talents. She is responsible for much of the club's publicity and paperwork. Despite her gentle demeanor, she has a daring and humorous side, once riding to school on the back of Matataki's motorcycle. In an unexpected display of skill, she proves to be an excellent rapper, stepping in to win a cultural festival rap battle for the club while wearing a werewolf costume. This moment highlights the hidden depths beneath her calm surface and her willingness to go to great lengths for her friends.
