Description
Pepesha Andrianov, also romanized in some sources as Pepesha Andreanova or Pepesha Andranof, is a character from the anime Shy. She is better known by her hero alias Spirit, rendered as Spirits in some translations, and she serves as the national hero of Russia. Pepesha is a tall, fair-complexioned woman in her late twenties, standing at 174 centimeters, with blond hair and blue eyes. Those close to her privately call her Pesha.

Pepesha presents herself as a friendly, relaxed, and outwardly cheerful person. She is well known for her heavy drinking and is usually seen with a drink in hand, often appearing intoxicated. She becomes noticeably more relaxed when drinking and has told Teru that her sober self would be almost unrecognizable. Her drinking habit is connected to her mother, who also drank in order to show more emotion toward her daughter while Pepesha was growing up. Beneath her bright smile and carefree manner, Pepesha is deeply empathetic and kind-hearted, and she tends to hide her worries behind her cheerful exterior. She is honest and direct about her thoughts and feelings and has a strong, genuine desire to help others. At the same time, she holds a realistic view of heroism: she knows that no hero can save everyone, and she has shared this understanding with Shy when the younger heroine struggled with guilt and fear of public disapproval after failing to save someone.

Pepesha's motivations are rooted in compassion and a sense of responsibility toward others. She wants to protect people and support the next generation of heroes, particularly the timid Japanese heroine Shy, whom she tries to guide with patience and encouragement. Her personal history with her mother also influences her wish to connect emotionally with those around her and to express warmth openly.

In the story, Pepesha appears as a major supporting character and stands as one of the experienced heroes of the world. She takes on the role of mentor and close ally to Shy, arriving at key moments to offer advice, reassurance, and combat support. She is described as a flying heroine with a knack for being present at the right time, and she continues to play a supporting role among the other heroes as events unfold.

Her most important relationship is with Teru Momijiyama, the heroine Shy. Pepesha acts as both a mentor and an older sister figure to Teru, and the two develop a bond of deep mutual trust and affection. Teru holds her in high regard and often turns to her for guidance, while Pepesha is consistently open to giving advice and encouragement. Pepesha is also well regarded among her fellow heroes, and her relationship with her mother remains central to understanding her character, since both her drinking and her emotional openness trace back to that influence.

Pepesha was initially conceived as a more serious older-sister type of character, but she developed into a relaxed and emotionally open heroine whose cheerfulness masks personal burdens. Her presence in the story explores the theme that heroes cannot save everyone, and she helps Shy come to terms with that difficult truth. Over the course of the story, she also grows as a fighter, later gaining the ability to control ice in addition to her earlier powers.

Pepesha's primary ability is the control of gases. She can manipulate gas in various ways and can transform her own body into smoke, allowing her to become intangible and highly mobile, which is why she is often shown flying. Her signature attack is called the Fuwa Fuwa Cannon. In later portions of the story, she additionally develops ice-based abilities, expanding the range of her fighting style.
