Description
Gō Mutsugi, known by the nickname Rocky, is a photojournalist who serves as a significant character in the Area 88 story across its various adaptations. He is initially a news reporter for a news agency, sent to the remote and dangerous airbase of Area 88 to cover the ongoing civil war in the fictional country of Asran. His assignment is to investigate the rumors of foreign freelance pilots fighting as mercenaries in the conflict.
Rocky is characterized by a blend of professional detachment and personal intrigue. He travels the world with no apparent ties to his home in Japan, embodying a philosophy that a photographer leaves nothing behind but their camera. This rootless, committed approach to his work defines much of his personality. Upon arriving at Area 88, he is initially shocked by the reckless and fatalistic attitude of the mercenary pilots, who seem indifferent to damage, injuries, and the very real dangers of their job. Despite this hardened environment, his primary motivation becomes focused on Shin Kazama, the sole Japanese pilot fighting for the Asranian military. He is captivated by Shin's presence, recognizing that the young pilot carries a hidden story and is different from the other fortune-seeking soldiers.
Rocky's role in the narrative is twofold. As an observer, he provides an outside perspective on the brutal reality of the mercenary life. More importantly, he becomes a crucial link to the outside world when one of his photographs, featuring Shin in the background, is published in a magazine article about Asran. This image is seen by Ryoko Tsugumo, Shin's fiancée back in Japan, and it becomes the first concrete evidence that convinces her Shin is still alive.
The character's fate and key developments vary significantly depending on the version of the story. In the original manga and some adaptations, after surviving being shot down and enduring a harrowing ordeal in the desert that costs him an arm and an eye, he eventually returns to Japan. In the 2004 TV series, his motivations are given a darker turn when he confesses that his true sponsor was Satoru Kanzaki. Kanzaki, who had betrayed Shin to force him into the war, hired Rocky to take a photograph of Shin's dead body as proof for Ryoko, hoping to coerce her into marriage. However, Rocky ultimately turns against this plan and helps to thwart the marriage. In contrast, the OVA version presents a more tragic end, as he is shot down and killed while accompanying a pilot on a patrol mission.
Rocky is not a pilot himself, so his notable abilities are those of his profession. He is a resourceful and brave photojournalist, willing to put himself in the line of fire to get the perfect shot. He is shown to be capable of surviving extreme situations, demonstrating resourcefulness and a fighting spirit during his time in the desert. His key relationships are with Shin Kazama, whose mystery he is driven to uncover; Ryoko Tsugumo, whose life he inadvertently changes with his photograph; and Satoru Kanzaki, whose sinister sponsorship in some versions reveals the manipulative forces at work behind the scenes.
