Description
Mitsuo Goshima is the younger brother of Kirie Goshima and a supporting character in the story of Kurouzu-cho. He is an elementary school student who lives with his sister and their parents, Yasuo Goshima, a local potter. As a child, Mitsuo is portrayed as curious and somewhat naive, often failing to grasp the immediate danger posed by the spiral curse until he personally experiences its effects. Unlike many adults in the town who become consumed by obsessive fear or fixation, Mitsuo retains a natural, childlike presence, though he is also prone to panic when confronted with the town's horrors. His primary motivation is simply to survive and remain with his family as the supernatural events escalate.

Mitsuo's role in the story is largely defined by his relationship with his older sister, Kirie. He relies heavily on her for protection and guidance as the environment around them grows increasingly hostile. Kirie risks her own safety on multiple occasions to save him, notably helping him escape from hunters who seek to eat the transformed snail-like people that begin appearing in the town's ruins. Mitsuo is not an active force in resisting the curse; instead, his presence emphasizes Kirie's devotion to her family and the growing reach of the spiral's influence into every part of life.

His development follows a path of survival rather than transformation or insight. He manages to endure several close encounters with the curse, including episodes involving the mosquito-like manifestations and the spread of the snail people. However, he ultimately succumbs to the spiral, becoming one of the snail people himself. In this form, he is the only surviving member of the Goshima family, though he is cursed and no longer fully human. The manner of his transformation and the sad inevitability of his fate illustrate the relentless nature of the curse, which spares no one regardless of age or innocence. Mitsuo does not display any special abilities or immunity to the spiral; if anything, he is noted as the only Goshima family member who does not possess any heightened resistance, making his eventual fate all the more tragic.
