Description
Azami Kurotani is a high school student who appears in the early chapters of the story as a friend and classmate of Kirie Goshima. Originally a transfer student from the neighboring town of Midoriyama-Shi, Azami is described as a very pretty girl with a straight, black bob-cut hairstyle, wide brown eyes, and distinctive bright red lips. Her most notable physical feature is a small, crescent-moon-shaped scar on her forehead, which she typically hides beneath her bangs. Azami received this scar during elementary school when she fell while attempting to impress a boy she liked by walking on a rope.

When first introduced, Azami appears to be a friendly, cheerful, and excitable person. She is extremely popular at school, with nearly all the boys wanting to date her and many girls feeling jealous of her popularity. Rumors circulate among the female students that her forehead scar possesses the power to attract boys, and that she uses this ability to make boys obsessed with her before cruelly breaking their hearts. Azami herself grows deeply irritated by the constant, unwanted attention from boys her age and rejects their advances with noticeable coldness.

The central turning point for Azami occurs when she insists on meeting Shuichi Saito, the boyfriend of her friend Kirie. Unlike every other boy she has encountered, Shuichi does not fall under her spell. Instead, upon meeting her, he senses that the spiral curse has begun to take root in her body and reacts with visible terror, screaming that she herself is a spiral. This rejection has a profound and obsessive effect on Azami. Rather than heeding his warnings to leave the town of Kurôzu-Cho to save herself, she becomes fixated on winning his attention. She begins stalking him, spending hours banging on the door of his house, and eventually persuades her parents to rent her an apartment in the town so she can harass him more frequently.

As the spiral curse takes hold, Azami’s personality darkens considerably. She becomes more malicious and sinister, willing to manipulate others to achieve her goal of getting close to Shuichi. She tricks a boy named Okada, who has a crush on her, by promising to go out with him if he lures Shuichi to a meeting place. When her plan unfolds, she reveals her true intentions to Okada, cruelly admitting she never meant to keep her promise, before her transformation reaches its horrifying climax. The crescent scar on her forehead has been steadily growing into a spiral that digs into her face, and by this point, the spiral has consumed much of her head, including one of her eyes. In a final, iconic moment of body horror, the spiral on her face becomes a devouring vortex that consumes Okada, and then begins to consume Azami herself, causing her to vanish from existence without a trace.

Azami’s key relationships are centered on her obsession with Shuichi, which overrides her friendship with Kirie. While she begins as Kirie’s close friend, her fixation on Shuichi drives her to increasingly isolated and destructive behavior. Her role in the story serves as a powerful early demonstration of how the spiral curse manifests not just as a physical malformation, but as a psychological force that twists human emotions, particularly vanity, obsession, and the desperate need for validation. Her inability to accept rejection and her determination to possess someone who does not desire her ultimately become the very mechanism of her destruction.
