Description
Hosoe, whose full name is Junko Hosoe, is a character in the Uma Musume: Pretty Derby - BNW no Chikai anime who serves as a commentator affiliated with the Umamusume Racing Association (URA) for the Twinkle Series. Beyond her professional duties at the racetrack, she also works as a bartender at her own establishment named Bar HosoJun. The character is a fictionalized version of the real-life Japanese race commentator Junko Hosoe, who also provides the voice for the anime counterpart. This real-world background heavily informs the role, as the actual Junko Hosoe was one of the first female jockeys in Japan during the 1990s, competing in 493 races before retiring in 2001 due to health issues, after which she transitioned to a career as a race commentator. This lived experience as a former jockey grants the character a unique and authoritative perspective when analyzing races and the equine athletes themselves, as she often provides commentary on the health, condition, and motivation of the characters from a position near the starting gate.

In the OVA BNW no Chikai, Hosoe’s primary role is to provide professional and insightful commentary during the major races that drive the narrative forward. Her personality is defined by her professionalism, sharp observational skills, and a deep-seated knowledge of racing, but she also possesses a more colorful side known from her real-life persona. Although she refrains from using such humor in anything related to Uma Musume, the real Hosoe is known for incorporating dirty jokes into her television programs and written columns, a trait that adds a layer of complexity to her public-facing character. Within the anime, she is often seen working alongside her colleague Misato Akasaka as part of a commentary team. The portrayal is notable for a specific incident of character development and authenticity that references a real historical racing event. During the 2015 Takarazuka Kinen, the real horse Gold Ship famously reared up just as the starting gate opened, causing the real-life commentator Junko Hosoe to shout out in surprise twice on the live broadcast. In the BNW no Chikai OVA, when this same incident was depicted, the character of Hosoe recreated her own authentic reactions, bringing a heightened sense of realism to the scene and demonstrating the character’s direct ties to the history of the sport she represents. Her notable ability, therefore, is not a physical one like the racing Uma Musume, but her expert analytical insight and the lived authority she brings to the commentary booth, which allows her to add depth and context to the races that a purely fictional character could not.
