Description
Hiyori Tono is a main character introduced in the Free! anime series, first appearing in the film Free!-Timeless Medley- the Promise and playing a significant role in Free!-Dive to the Future. He is a first-year university student at Shimogami University and a member of its swim club, where he specializes in backstroke. Standing at 181 centimeters tall with auburn hair, hazel eyes, and a muscular build, he is typically seen wearing large, square corrective lenses that give him a gentle appearance, though without them his expression can appear much sharper.
Hiyori was born on January 20th. His early childhood was marked by a sense of loneliness, as his parents were often away at work, leading him to spend a great deal of time alone. In an effort to not be a burden, he tried to be a good child, but this also made him shy and reserved. A significant change occurred when he met Ikuya Kirishima at a swimming club; Ikuya invited him to swim together, an act that helped alleviate Hiyori's profound loneliness and brought him genuine happiness. During his middle school years, Hiyori lived in the United States due to his parents' jobs, and it was there that he and Ikuya became close friends. When Ikuya experienced a dangerous episode of oxygen deprivation and nearly drowned during practice, Hiyori was the one who saved him, an incident that further solidified his protective instincts toward Ikuya. Upon returning to Japan, Hiyori attended Shionezaki High School with Ikuya, sharing a dormitory room with him and continuing as teammates on the swim team. He is also the one who introduced Kaede Kinjo to the world of competitive swimming.
On the surface, Hiyori presents a calm, gentle, and outwardly friendly demeanor, often greeting people with a polite and disarming smile. He is serious and hardworking, but this exterior masks a deeply complex and more intense personality. His most defining characteristic is his fiercely overprotective and possessive nature when it comes to Ikuya Kirishima. This protectiveness was initially encouraged by Ikuya's older brother, Natsuya Kirishima, who asked Hiyori to look after Ikuya due to his fragile health before leaving to pursue a professional swimming career. Hiyori took this responsibility to an extreme, not only shielding Ikuya from physical harm but also attempting to control his emotional connections.
He views Ikuya as a genius swimmer and believes that his former teammates from the Iwatobi Junior High School Swim Club, including Haruka Nanase, Makoto Tachibana, and Asahi Shiina, are unworthy "weaklings" who negatively influenced him in the past. This belief stems from a combination of motives: a genuine fear that reconnecting with them would cause Ikuya to relapse into a state of overtraining and emotional distress, as well as a more personal anxiety about being replaced in his friendship and a desire to maintain Ikuya's focus on individual glory rather than team relays. In his view, the strongest version of Ikuya is one who swims alone. This leads Hiyori to be brash, competitive, and even hostile toward Haruka and the others, going so far as to forbid them from seeing Ikuya, research Haruka's personal background, and make sharp accusations, such as telling Haruka that everyone who swims with him suffers.
Despite this aggressive exterior toward outsiders, his relationship with Ikuya is more nuanced. Hiyori is a constant and supportive presence in his life, often cooking for him, sharing a room, and tending to his needs. He also has a playful side with Ikuya, gently teasing him to enjoy his reactions. However, Ikuya is not always receptive to Hiyori's intense interference, at times finding it to be an intrusion. Hiyori's role in the story is initially that of an antagonist who prevents reconciliation. This changes when Makoto Tachibana, a fellow backstroke specialist, challenges him to a race on behalf of Haruka. Although Hiyori wins the race and upholds his ban, the subsequent efforts of Ikuya's friends to make amends, combined with Ikuya's own realization that he has been isolating himself, begin to break down Hiyori's resistance. Ikuya eventually acknowledges their friendship directly and asks Hiyori to swim with him as part of a medley relay team, an offer that prompts Hiyori to reconsider his rigid stance. The culmination of his character development occurs at the All-Japan Invitational, where Ikuya reconciles with his brother Natsuya. After the race, Natsuya apologizes to Hiyori for placing the heavy burden of Ikuya's care on his shoulders. With this weight lifted, Hiyori is finally able to relax his overprotective nature. He comes to accept Ikuya's friendships with Haruka and the others, eventually spending time with them as well and making a peaceful transition into the wider group.
In terms of abilities, Hiyori is a skilled and competitive swimmer who specializes in the backstroke. He is highly knowledgeable about other swimmers and is often well-informed about their capabilities and backgrounds. His designated image animal is the polar bear, symbolizing his outwardly calm but internally strong and resilient nature. Beyond swimming, Hiyori has a wide range of personal interests. He enjoys reading, visiting cafes, listening to rock music, and eating egg-based dishes with coffee. He is also fond of outdoor activities such as basketball and camping, is proficient in English, and is known to consistently beat the Kirishima brothers at home video games, though he is not skilled at arcade games.
