Description
Karauri is a demon who serves as one of the primary subordinates to Hozuki, the chief deputy of King Enma in the Japanese hell depicted in Hōzuki no Reitetsu. He is almost always seen alongside his best friend and fellow worker, Nasubi. In terms of appearance, Karauri is an oni, or ogre-like demon, with a design that makes him look like a young boy, but this is typical of his imp-like species; he is actually a young adult. This youthful appearance plays a role in his personal life, as he harbors a significant crush on O-koh, a beautiful and mature demon who works as the chief assistant of Mortal Hell. His admiration for O-koh is one of his defining traits, and it is noted that he has a secret masochistic streak, specifically wishing that she would beat him.
In the workplace, Karauri and Nasubi are low-level employees who often find themselves messing up or creating problems, which frequently requires Hozuki to step in and resolve the situation. Despite his status, Karauri is generally portrayed as being slightly more intelligent and level-headed than his dim-witted partner, Nasubi, and he is often seen yelling at Nasubi for his foolishness. He is a familiar presence in the administrative offices of hell, representing the everyday workers who manage the gruesome but mundane tasks of the afterlife. His role in the story is primarily as a supporting character who helps to illustrate the bureaucratic and comedic nature of hell's operations, reacting to the chaos around him with relatability.
Karauri does not typically drive major plotlines but is a consistent fixture in the series, serving as a comedic foil and an example of the typical demon trying to do his job. The series does not provide a detailed arc of personal development for Karauri; instead, his characteristics remain largely consistent, reinforcing the show's focus on humorous, episodic workplace interactions rather than profound character growth. He has no notable supernatural abilities beyond the standard traits of a demon and is more defined by his personality and relationships, particularly his friendship with Nasubi and his unrequited feelings for O-koh.
