Description
Giorgio, an eleven-year-old boy, lives with his family in the Swiss village of Sonogno near the Italian border in 1875. His family endures severe hardship from drought and debt, surviving solely on farming. A devastating fire, deliberately set by the child trafficker Luini, destroys their vital cornfield. During this calamity, Giorgio's father suffers a head injury resulting in blindness. To secure medical treatment for his father, Giorgio sells himself into servitude under Luini for 25 francs, agreeing to work as a chimney sweep in Milan.

Before departing, Giorgio discovers he was adopted as an infant after his biological father's death in war. His adoptive parents, Roberto and Jessica, raised him alongside his younger twin brothers, Carlo and Pietro. He shares a profound bond with his pet ermine, Piccolo, who remains his constant companion. Traveling to Milan, Giorgio befriends Alfredo Martini, another child laborer from a noble background. They swear eternal friendship after Alfredo defends Giorgio against false accusations of theft. Upon reaching the city, the boys are separated and sold to different masters.

Assigned to Marcello Rossi, a comparatively kinder master, Giorgio finds the household dominated by Marcello's harsh wife, Edda. He suffers abuse, hunger, and humiliation from their son while caring for their sickly daughter, Angeletta. He also faces harassment from the street gang Wolf Pack. Despite these trials, Giorgio reunites with Alfredo. Together, they establish the Black Brothers, a mutual-aid fraternity for chimney sweeps. Within this group, Giorgio transforms from a passive victim into a resilient leader, organizing resistance against the Wolf Pack and ultimately earning their wary respect.

His intellectual awakening begins under Professor Casella, who teaches him to read and write, igniting a love for literature. Giorgio's loyalty faces a severe test when Alfredo reveals his noble lineage and the conspiracy by their uncle Mauricio and aunt Grazela to frame Alfredo and his sister Bianca for their parents' murders. Giorgio aids in reuniting the siblings and clearing their names. Alfredo later dies of consumption in Giorgio's arms. Grappling with profound grief, Giorgio honors Alfredo's final request: to protect Bianca and fulfill his dreams.

Giorgio assumes leadership of the Black Brothers, organizing Alfredo's funeral through a successful fundraiser. After completing his six-month contract in 1876, he returns to Sonogno with Piccolo, reuniting with his family. Ten years later, in 1886, Giorgio has become a teacher. He marries Bianca, and they name their son Alfredo in memory of his late friend.
