Description
Jiro Yamashita is a former high school chemistry teacher who left his career to become an idol as part of the unit S.E.M, where he specifically represents the science component of the group's name. Originally from Ishikawa Prefecture, he is 30 years old and stands at 185 centimeters tall. His outward appearance is often unkempt, with a notable habit of letting his hair cover one of his eyes, though when he properly grooms himself and stands up straight, he is described as being quite handsome.

His primary motivation for entering the entertainment industry is disarming in its simplicity and pragmatism. He has a blatant preoccupation with wealth and openly admits that his reason for becoming an idol is the prospect of earning a substantial amount of money, viewing it essentially as a lucrative side job. This mercenary attitude is coupled with a very lax and somewhat slovenly personality. He has a tendency to borrow school science equipment for personal use, such as brewing coffee, a behavior that his former colleague and current unit member Michio Hazama frequently scolds him for. Despite his casual and sometimes unmotivated exterior, he is not lazy in a completely apathetic sense; he simply prefers to do the bare minimum to get by, jokingly remarking that he hopes he can work just hard enough to not be abandoned by the group.

Within the context of the story, Jiro's journey begins when his fellow teacher Michio Hazama shares his dream of becoming an idol. Jiro was hesitant about resigning from his teaching position until the conversation turned to the potential financial rewards of idol work, at which point he agreed to join. Together with Michio and another colleague, Rui Maita, he formed their unit. In the early stages of their idol career, the trio faced numerous failed auditions. Jiro was on the verge of giving up entirely when Michio expressed regret for dragging him and Rui into his personal dream. In response, Jiro noted that remaining as teachers would not have led to a particularly extravagant life, reaffirming his commitment to the group. This moment highlights that even though he frames his life around money, he is also fundamentally a realist who adapts to the path he has chosen.

His key relationships are with his unit mates. Compared to Michio and Rui, he sees himself as the more world-weary and cynical one, often referring to himself as an old man and noting that the other two seem more youthful in spirit, even though Michio is actually older than him. Despite claiming they all have personalities heading in completely opposite directions, he acknowledges that they get along well. Outside of his unit, he shares a bond with other idols who appreciate drinking, such as Kaede Takagaki.

Throughout his development, Jiro shows a gradual shift from a man solely motivated by money to one who begins to find genuine value in his work. Although he continues to display a self-deprecating and slightly pessimistic attitude, events such as his high placement in popularity polls and witnessing the earnest efforts of those around him help to spark a sense of confidence and passion for being an idol. He demonstrates notable abilities that are not immediately obvious. While he claims to be bad at dancing and physical activities, he possesses a strong singing voice. He is also a capable cook, as he has lived alone for a long time. He is skilled at radio calisthenics, and his hobbies include visiting cat cafés and going to horse races. Despite his gruff and money-focused claims, he has a hidden compassionate side, demonstrated when he made time in a busy schedule to secretly watch a young fan play in a little league baseball game, becoming flustered and hiding behind a newspaper when the boy noticed him.
