Description
Bernardo Gillichanan is a significant character in Inazuma Eleven: Orion no Kokuin, serving as the president of the Orion Foundation and the older brother of Froy Gillichanan. Following the death of his father, Valentin Gillichanan, Bernardo inherited leadership of the foundation, an organization ostensibly dedicated to saving children and providing financial aid to impoverished populations. He is also the director of the World Football Association, giving him immense influence over the sport globally.
In terms of personality, Bernardo initially presents himself as cold, cruel, and ruthless. He appears willing to employ any underhanded method to achieve his goals, such as threatening Takuma Shinjou by promising to kidnap his son to ensure loyalty. However, this icy exterior is revealed to be a facade born from trauma. Before his father's death, Bernardo was a kind, admirable, and highly capable individual whom his younger brother deeply respected. He was dedicated to learning how to succeed his father and was a source of encouragement for Froy. The loss of Valentin devastated Bernardo, and it was at this vulnerable moment that his mother, Irina Gillichanan, began to psychologically manipulate and control him, corrupting his spirit and forcing him to abandon his father's compassionate ideals.
Bernardo's motivations are therefore complex. On the surface, he seems driven by profit and total control over the football world, continuing the Orion Foundation's work but through means that often cause widespread unhappiness, even among the children the foundation is meant to help. Internally, he is aware of the harm he is causing but is unable to disobey his mother due to deep-seated childhood trauma. Irina subjected Bernardo to severe psychological and physical abuse from a young age, controlling every aspect of his life, from his clothing to his friendships, and punishing him brutally for any perceived failure. This abuse, which continued into his adulthood, left him in a state of total submission and terror of his mother. His role in the story is that of a primary antagonist, but he is ultimately revealed to be a puppet, with the true mastermind being his mother, Irina.
Key relationships define his arc. His bond with his younger brother Froy is central. Froy initially despises Bernardo for his cruel actions and for perverting their father's legacy, leading him to oppose his brother openly. However, Froy eventually discovers that Bernardo is being manipulated and abused by their mother. This revelation allows for a reconciliation, with Froy vowing to support his brother no matter what. Bernardo's relationship with his father was one of admiration and devotion, while his relationship with his mother is one of fear and coercion, having been the victim of her hidden cruelty for his entire life.
Bernardo experiences significant development over the course of the series. During a match between Japan and Brazil, he momentarily breaks free from his conditioning, expressing positive sentiments about the Brazilian team rediscovering the joyful side of life despite their loss. This defiance is met with a violent physical reprimand from Irina, plunging him back into submission. It is only near the very end of the series that Bernardo finally finds the courage to stand up to his mother, rebelling against her actions. In the finale, he requests to be arrested, feeling responsible for the Orion Foundation's crimes, but Irina tells him he has nothing to blame himself for, allowing him to continue leading the foundation. Ultimately, he and Froy appear happy to be able to manage their family's enterprise freely.
Regarding notable abilities, while much of his power is institutional and financial, Bernardo is portrayed as highly competent. He is a skilled football player, having been good enough to teach Froy various techniques when they were children. He is also a shrewd and effective businessman, capable of running the massive Orion Foundation and overseeing a global conspiracy to dominate the world economy through football. However, his most defining characteristic is his deep psychological trauma, which renders him unable to act against his mother's will until the series' climax.
