Description
Ikuzou Kumaneko is the commander of the Earth Defense Corps Earth Granner, the organization dedicated to protecting the planet from alien threats seeking to steal Earth Energy. His dedication to helping people on a global scale originated during his university days, where he spent considerable time assisting schoolmates and solving problems for others alongside his close friend, Dr. Bariki Kudou.

In his role as commander, Ikuzou presents a calm, stoic, and serious demeanor. Despite this, he is a deeply caring individual, particularly when it comes to his family. He carries a photograph of his family with him, reflecting his protective nature. This protectiveness is especially evident with his daughter, Rin Kumaneko, who serves as an operator for Earth Granner. His guarded demeanor is partly a result of a painful past event: the disappearance of his son, Kakeru, who was an early candidate to pilot the Granners a year before the main story begins. Discussing these past events visibly distresses him.

Ikuzou's past is deeply intertwined with Dr. Bariki Kudou, the creator of the Granners. While he often expresses irritation at Bariki's forgetfulness and his habit of leaving experiment parts lying around, Ikuzou genuinely admires Bariki's capabilities and the two share a strong, trusting bond forged in their university years. His relationship with his son Kakeru is the most complex and strained part of his life. When Kakeru reappears, having been deceived and controlled by the alien group Dark Spinner to pilot the Gao Granner Saber, Ikuzou is faced with a difficult crisis. Witnessing Saber go on dangerous rampages fueled by Dark Energy, he advocates for resetting the machine. His primary motivation is fear for his son’s safety, believing that Saber cannot be controlled and that Kakeru will be harmed if they do not sever the connection. This position creates tension with other Earth Granner members, who understand the profound emotional bond between Kakeru and Saber and know how devastating destroying that bond would be. Ultimately, confronted with their perspective, Ikuzou relents, allowing them to find an alternative way to subdue Saber. This decision marks a significant point in his development, as he learns to trust in the bonds of others and ultimately reconciles with his son, mending their strained relationship.

Distinctive traits include his name, which incorporates a linguistic play. His first name, Ikuzou, is a variation of "Ikuzo," a Japanese phrase meaning "Let's go," which serves as his catchphrase. His surname, Kumaneko, directly translates to "panda". While he does not pilot a Granner himself, his abilities lie in his leadership, strategic command of the Earth Granner organization, and his scientific partnership with Dr. Bariki, which he developed from their university days working together to solve problems.
