Description
Lionel is the reigning Champion of the Galar region and a central figure in the Pokémon World Coronation Series, where he held the title of Monarch before ultimately being defeated by Ash Ketchum. He hails from the town of Postwick in Galar and was raised by Chairman Rose after being taken in as a child. Described as somewhat introverted and unpopular in his early years, Lionel's life changed when he received his first Pokémon, a Charmander, which became his lifelong partner. From that point, he embarked on a journey that led him to win the Galar League without a single loss, establishing a reputation as an unbeatable trainer. Despite his immense skill and fame, Lionel remains a kindhearted and approachable individual. He is always willing to help people and Pokémon in need, and he carries himself with a calm, confident demeanor. However, he has a notable and often comedic flaw: he possesses an extremely poor sense of direction and frequently gets lost, even in familiar places, requiring others to give him directions. Lionel's primary motivation is to become stronger and to inspire other trainers to reach their full potential. He takes his role as Champion seriously, viewing it as a responsibility to protect Galar and to push the boundaries of Pokémon battling. He is deeply passionate about the World Coronation Series and believes that battling is a way to connect with others and grow. Within the story of Pokémon Journeys: The Series, Lionel serves as the ultimate goal for Ash, representing the pinnacle of the World Coronation Series. He first appears in a flashback defeating Lance to become the Monarch, which sets Ash on his quest to face him. Lionel later meets Ash in person after witnessing Ash's Pikachu instinctively Gigantamax, and the two develop a mentor-student dynamic. Lionel gives Ash a Dynamax Band and agrees to a friendly battle, which Lionel wins decisively. Over time, his role expands beyond that of a rival as he becomes a key ally during the Darkest Day crisis, working alongside Ash and Goh to stop the rampage of Dynamax Pokémon and later attempting to capture the legendary Pokémon Eternatus. When he is gravely injured in the attempt, he entrusts the mission to Ash and Goh, showing his trust in their abilities. After the crisis, he supports Ash's journey through the Masters Eight Tournament, where they eventually face off in a climactic final battle. Lionel develops several important relationships throughout the series. His childhood friend Sonia was once a battling rival, but she later chose to become a researcher, while Lionel continued as a trainer. He also has a younger brother named Hop, who idolizes him. His rivalry with fellow Gym Leader Raihan is a recurring point of reference, and over the course of the series, he forms a strong mutual respect with Ash, recognizing Ash's growth and determination. Lionel undergoes notable development from a seemingly untouchable champion into a more nuanced figure. He learns that even the strongest can be challenged, and after his loss to Ash, he shows grace and sportsmanship, congratulating his opponent and reflecting on his own journey. He also evolves from being somewhat distant, due to his fame, into a more openly collaborative figure who values the strength of others. In terms of abilities, Lionel is an extraordinarily skilled and strategic battler. He is renowned for his use of the Gigantamax phenomenon, which he employs with his partner Charizard, a Pokémon he has raised since it was a Charmander. Charizard is his most powerful and iconic Pokémon, capable of Gigantamaxing into a form that unleashes devastating fire attacks. Beyond Charizard, Lionel commands a diverse and powerful team that includes Dragapult, which he can ride; Rillaboom, which he used against Alain; Mr. Rime, Cinderace, and Inteleon, all of which he deployed in his final battle against Ash. He also became the caretaker of the legendary Pokémon Eternatus, entrusted to him by Goh to maintain the Power Spots in Galar. Lionel's battle style is adaptive and formidable, often using his opponents' strategies against them. He is known for his ability to read battles with precision, allowing him to turn the tide even when at a disadvantage. His reputation as the unbeatable champion before his loss to Ash cements him as one of the most accomplished and respected trainers in the world.
