Description
Raihan is a character in Pokémon Journeys: The Series who serves as the Gym Leader of Hammerlocke Stadium in the Galar region. He is a tall, slim young man with brown skin, teal eyes, and black hair that is mostly hidden beneath an orange hat. He wears a black and yellow jacket with a hood trimmed with white, tooth-like fabric, blue shorts bearing his Gym's symbol, and black and orange shoes. His appearance, especially the hood design, is inspired by his specialty in Dragon-type Pokémon, and he is sometimes called the Tamer of Dragons.
Raihan specializes in Dragon-type Pokémon and awards the Dragon Badge to trainers who defeat him. He is widely regarded as the strongest of the Galar Gym Leaders and is famous for a battling style built around weather conditions. Having trained in many different environments, he mastered the use of weather effects such as sandstorms, harsh sunlight, rain, and hail to gain the advantage in battle. In his Gym he favors double battles, and he often uses non-Dragon Pokémon to set up the weather before bringing out his Dragon-types to attack.
His primary motivation is to defeat Leon, the Champion of Galar, whom he considers his greatest rival. Raihan has lost all ten of his matches against Leon, yet he has knocked out more of Leon's Pokémon than any other trainer and is considered the closest anyone has come to beating him. Rumors suggest he could easily become Champion in another region, but he refuses to leave Galar because defeating Leon is his top priority above any other honor.
Raihan's relationship with Leon is one of mutual respect and fierce competition. He is also highly active on social media, constantly carrying his Rotom Phone and taking selfies. He originally began taking selfies to never forget the pain of his defeats, but his posts later expanded to show his workout routines, fashion interests, and daily training. Some of his followers leave harsh comments whenever he loses to Leon, yet Raihan continues to hold onto the dream of taking a selfie after finally winning against him.
In the story of Pokémon Journeys: The Series, Raihan appears as one of Galar's most accomplished trainers and a significant measuring stick for strong competitors within the region. His development centers on his long pursuit of Leon, his refinement of weather-based battle tactics, and his public personality as a stylish, outgoing, and determined Gym Leader who remains in Galar until he accomplishes his goal. His notable abilities include his mastery of weather manipulation, his skilled command of Dragon-type Pokémon, his competence in both single and double battles, and his record of pushing Leon further than any other trainer has been able to.
