Description
Chloé Cerise, known as Koharu Sakuragi in the original Japanese version, is a central character in the Pokémon Journeys: The Series. She resides in Vermilion City in the Kanto region as the daughter of the renowned Pokémon Professor Cerise and his wife, Talia, and is the older sister of her brother, Parker. Her childhood friendship with Goh, established when they were six years old at Professor Oak’s Pokémon Summer Camp, is a foundational part of her history; it was during this camp that Goh first declared his ambitious dream to catch the mythical Pokémon Mew.
Physically, Chloé is a short, slender girl with fair skin and distinct asparagus-green eyes. Her maroon hair is typically styled in a side ponytail, secured with a cherry blossom-shaped clip that complements her name. Her everyday outfit is primarily her school uniform, which consists of a baggy white dress patterned with blue anchors, a blue and white collar, and a yellow ribbon at the neck, paired with short blue and white boots. On casual occasions, she opts for simpler attire, such as a light pink dress over a white shirt.
Initially, Chloé presents a detached and aloof exterior, often seeming cold or indifferent to the world around her. She is easily exasperated and strongly dislikes when people make assumptions about her, particularly the expectation that she will follow in her father’s footsteps to become a Pokémon researcher. This pressure has led her to build a wall around herself, preferring a quiet life focused on her schoolwork rather than the unpredictable adventures of Pokémon training. A significant part of her early personality is her apparent lack of a personal dream or goal, a source of uncertainty that contrasts sharply with the passionate enthusiasms of her companions, Ash Ketchum and Goh. Her reluctance toward Pokémon is not absolute, however; it is shown to be a change from her more open-minded childhood self.
One of the most critical elements of Chloé’s backstory involves her relationship with the family’s loyal Yamper. As a child, she was jealous of the attention her parents gave the newly arrived Pokémon, fearing it would replace her, and she would constantly tell it to go away. One day, Yamper ran away, and a guilt-ridden young Chloé went out at night to find it, only to be attacked by a group of Venonat. Yamper bravely defended her, saving her from the wild Pokémon. This incident transformed their relationship, forging a deep bond of love and trust. This history explains Yamper’s persistent affection for her in the present, despite her cold demeanor, and her eventual willingness to command it in battle. Her first real command in battle occurs when a Gengar haunts the Cerise Laboratory; her father instructs her to have Yamper use Spark, which successfully drives the ghost Pokémon away.
Chloé’s role in the story is that of a grounded, sometimes reluctant, presence who is gradually drawn into the world of Pokémon training. Her motivations evolve significantly throughout the series, beginning from a place of uncertainty. The pivotal turning point occurs when she encounters a wild Eevee that, uniquely, seems unable to evolve. Seeing a reflection of her own indecisiveness in the Pokémon, Chloé forms a powerful bond with it and ultimately becomes its official Trainer. This marks a major shift in her character; she actively steps into the role of a Pokémon Trainer, becoming more adventurous, relaxed, and willing to embrace new experiences. Her journey with Eevee becomes a parallel quest for self-discovery, teaching her that it is acceptable not to have a predetermined path or to fit into a predefined mold.
Her character development is further illustrated through specific adventures. For example, after discovering a book about the Galarian forms of Ponyta and Rapidash, she travels to the Lumirinth Forest. There, she finds a wounded Rapidash and, guided by a Ponyta, braves mischievous Impidimp to find a healing flower nectar, demonstrating her growing empathy and resourcefulness. Her key relationships are central to her growth. With Goh, her childhood friend, she shares a deep, unspoken care, often scolding him for his single-minded obsessions while quietly looking out for him. With Ash, she is initially baffled by his spontaneous passion but gradually comes to appreciate his ability to help her step outside her comfort zone.
While not a prodigious battler like Ash, Chloé demonstrates notable abilities and competence. She is highly intelligent and dedicated to her studies, showing a keen analytical mind. Her primary strengths lie in her empathy, level-headedness, and the authentic care she shows for her friends and Pokémon, traits that prove invaluable to her personal growth and the resolution of various situations.
