Description
Byrnnd World is the captain of the World Pirates and serves as the main antagonist of the One Piece anime special 3D2Y: Overcoming Ace's Death! Luffy's Pledge to His Friends. Known by the epithet the World Destroyer, he is a legendary pirate who was active in the same era as Gol D. Roger and Edward Newgate, posing a threat great enough to make the World Government and Marines fear him.
In his youth, Byrnnd World was driven by a simple dream of sailing the seas with his older brother, Byojack, seeking freedom and adventure. Despite his brother being ill, World was determined to protect him and took him along on their journey. However, after consuming the Moa Moa no Mi, a Paramecia-class Devil Fruit that allows him to amplify the size and speed of any object he touches by up to one hundred times, his power grew rapidly. He became notorious for destroying anything that crossed his path, including Marine battleships, civilian towns, and the ships of World Nobles. His destructive rampage earned him the moniker World Destroyer and a bounty of 500 million berries, leading to a massive allied operation of Marines, Cipher Pol agents, and rival pirates to capture him.
The defining moment of his past came when Cipher Pol agents infiltrated his crew and turned some of his subordinates against him. During the ensuing battle, Byrnnd World was betrayed and captured. As he fell, he saw his brother and remaining loyal crewmates fleeing to save themselves. World perceived this act of survival as a deep betrayal. He was subsequently imprisoned in Level 6 of Impel Down, the deepest and most secure level, and was frozen in ice for thirty years to prevent his escape and aging. By the time of the special, Byrnnd World is chronologically seventy-eight years old, but due to being frozen, his physical condition is that of a man in his mid-forties. His entire worldview is now consumed by revenge against the World Government. He views all personal relationships as transactional, believing that friends and crewmates are nothing more than tools to be used and discarded for one's goals. This cynical philosophy is a direct contrast to the protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, whom World taunts for his failure to save his brother, Portgas D. Ace. World's motivations are not for wealth or fame, but for total destruction. In the story of 3D2Y, Byrnnd World escapes from Impel Down during the chaos caused by Marshall D. Teach. He reunites with his old crew, who have built him a powerful new submarine, the Groseade. To draw out a member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea as a hostage, he attacks Boa Hancock's home island of Amazon Lily. There, he easily defeats Luffy, who is training in the surrounding wilderness, and kidnaps Hancock's sisters, Sandersonia and Marigold. This sets the stage for a final confrontation. Despite his immense power, his refusal to acknowledge any bond beyond utility becomes his weakness. He is ultimately defeated when Luffy, enraged by World's claim that friends are tools, lands a powerful Gomu Gomu no Red Hawk. In his final moments, Byrnnd World tries to trigger his ultimate one hundred times cannon to destroy the pursuing Marine fleet, but the projectile is effortlessly sliced in half by Dracule Mihawk.
