Description
The Nightmare Beasts are a type of monster that appears within the dream world in the film. They are born from the shadowy, lightless regions of that realm, manifesting from the negative aspects of dreams. In their natural state, these beasts are normally consumed and processed by dream eating fairies known as baku, who keep the dream world balanced by preventing nightmares from taking hold. However, in this story, the baku fairy Maamu deliberately creates and controls Nightmare Beasts to serve her own purposes.
As creatures of pure nightmare energy, the Nightmare Beasts lack individual personality or consciousness. They do not speak, reason, or display any form of independent motivation. Their behavior is entirely instinctual and directed by Maamu’s will. They act as mindless extensions of her desire to trap children and Pretty Cures within the dream world, so that her son Yumeta would not be alone. The beasts have no personal goals or emotions; they exist solely to attack, restrain, and overwhelm anyone who threatens Maamu’s plan.
In the story, the Nightmare Beasts play a central antagonistic role as the physical obstacles the Pretty Cures must overcome. Maamu sends waves of these monsters to attack the Cures and to keep the trapped children asleep. They are encountered in multiple instances throughout the dream world. Their most notable ability is the power to trap individuals within their own dreams by dragging them into a state of unconsciousness from which they cannot easily wake. The beasts can also physically bind and overwhelm even multiple transformed Pretty Cures with their collective strength. As the conflict escalates, all the individual Nightmare Beasts merge into a single, much larger and more powerful combined form. This combined Nightmare Beast is capable of restraining and overpowering the entire group of Cures, using tendrils or limbs to hold them helpless. It requires the combined efforts of many Cures, including the purified power of the Miracle Lights and the intervention of Cure Echo, to ultimately defeat it.
In terms of relationships, the Nightmare Beasts are directly tied to Maamu, who creates and commands them. They are the antithesis of the dream eating fairies like Yumeta, whose role is to consume nightmares. The beasts are opposed by every Pretty Cure team appearing in the film, as well as by Yumeta once he overcomes his fear and embraces his true duty. There is no development of the beasts themselves; they remain static, mindless threats throughout the story. Their only change is the physical combination into a stronger form, which represents an escalation of danger rather than a change in nature or motive. Their defeat marks the resolution of the dream world crisis, allowing the trapped children to awaken.
The notable abilities of the Nightmare Beasts include the creation of nightmare illusions that trap individuals in their own dreams, physical attacks that can subdue multiple Cures at once, and the capacity to merge into a larger composite entity with enhanced power and reach. They are born from darkness and fear, and they cannot be reasoned with or negotiated with. Their presence underscores the theme of overcoming fear and the importance of friendship and mutual support.
