Description
Kosaburo, also known in English as Butch, is a recurring character from the anime Pocket Monster Side Story, which was later released internationally as Pokémon Chronicles. He is a member of Team Rocket and works as part of a two‑person team alongside his partner Yamato, known in English as Cassidy. The duo is considered more competent and successful than the more familiar trio of Musashi, Kojiro, and Meowth, and they are frequently assigned higher‑stakes missions.

Very little is known about Kosaburo’s early life. At some point before his first appearance, he trained to become a Rocket member at the same time as Musashi, Kojiro, and Yamato. During that training period, he was paired with Yamato, and the two have remained partners ever since. Kosaburo did not appear with a Pokémon of his own until his third on‑screen appearance; before then, Yamato was always the one to handle battles. Despite that, he possesses other skills typical of Team Rocket agents, including proficiency in disguise and notable physical strength. On one occasion, he was able to pick up and throw Musashi into a wall with relative ease.

In terms of personality, Kosaburo tends to be calmer and quieter than his partner, often allowing Yamato to take the lead in their schemes. He carries an elitist attitude, looking down on Musashi and Kojiro for what he sees as their incompetence. A persistent running gag involves other characters mispronouncing or incorrectly calling his name, a mistake that visibly irritates him to the point where he once declared he was going to change his name entirely. Despite being more accomplished than the trio, his own plans frequently go awry when they encounter Ash and his friends or other meddlesome trainers.

Kosaburo’s primary motivation is to complete the missions assigned by Team Rocket, particularly capturing rare and powerful Pokémon. He seems to take pride in his work and in maintaining the image of a capable agent. His relationship with Yamato is professional and tightly coordinated; they communicate effectively and rely on each other’s abilities. They share a mutual respect that sometimes borders on friendly camaraderie. Toward Musashi and Kojiro, Kosaburo is dismissive and openly mocking, though the two pairs do occasionally cooperate when ordered.

Over the course of his appearances, Kosaburo undergoes a degree of development. In later episodes set in the main Pokémon series, he is shown to have left Team Rocket entirely and started operating a café, suggesting a turn toward a more ordinary life. This change marks a departure from his earlier single‑minded focus on his criminal career. His Pokémon roster expanded over time and included species such as Raticate, Primeape, Hitmontop, Mightyena, Cloyster, Shuckle, and a female Meowth. He used these Pokémon in various battles and missions, though with mixed success.

Kosaburo’s notable abilities include a talent for disguise and unarmed physical combat, which he occasionally employs when Pokémon battles are not the primary method of achieving his goals. His strategic thinking is sufficient to devise complex scams, but these schemes are usually foiled by the intervention of the main characters. Despite his higher rank and generally greater competence, he never quite escapes the pattern of failure that characterises many Team Rocket operatives.
