Description
Corporal Joseph "Chow" Cho is a technical specialist and martial artist serving in the A-01 team, holding the rank of Lance Corporal or Private First Class. His personal emblem, displayed on his helmet, is the Chinese character for "fist," a reflection of his combat philosophy and identity.
Chow is characterized as a solitary and quiet individual, with a demeanor often compared to that of a Zen master. Despite his reserved nature, he possesses a deeply competitive streak, which becomes a defining feature of his personality. This competitive drive is most visibly demonstrated during his downtime aboard the F.A.S. Alesia, where he practices martial arts in the hangar, observed by his squadmates. It is during one such session that he is provoked by fellow trooper Ratzass, who mocks him with a ballet move and sarcastically directs him to a dance class. Chow responds by challenging Ratzass to a direct physical confrontation.
The fight showcases Chow's exceptional speed, agility, and skill, as he effectively dodges Ratzass's attacks and gains the upper hand. However, the match ends in a draw when Ratzass, spurred on by encouragement, blocks a finishing kick and lands a solid punch. This encounter highlights both his formidable hand-to-hand abilities and a certain impulsiveness, foreshadowing his later actions in combat. His motivations are rooted in a soldier's duty to his unit and the mission, as he willingly participates in the dangerous search for the missing vessel John A. Warden.
In the story, Chow's primary technical role is activated when the Roughnecks locate the lost ship. He is ordered to reactivate the John A. Warden's engines, a task he successfully performs, but which inadvertently releases a horde of Warrior Bugs held within the vessel. This event triggers a desperate last stand. In the ensuing chaos, his relationship with his squadmates is defined by his actions as a rear guard. After losing his rifle, he relies solely on his martial arts training, demonstrating incredible prowess by defeating several Warrior Bugs with his bare hands. He even manages to knock one of the massive creatures to the ground, a testament to his strength and technique. His final moments serve as his character development arc, as his established skill and competitive nature lead him to confront the enemy directly. However, while focusing on the fight, he is stabbed from behind by another Warrior Bug and killed, his fate serving as a stark illustration of the lethal and overwhelming nature of the Arachnid threat. His notable abilities combine technical expertise in mechanical systems with mastery in unarmed combat, making him a unique asset whose fighting style focuses on speed and precision rather than brute force.
