Description
Kyoko Asechi is the head of the prestigious Prism Show agency Pretty Top and a former Prism Queen champion. In the events of Pretty Rhythm Dear My Future, she is 27 years old. She has short, dark brown hair that reaches just above her shoulders, light brown eyes, and typically wears glasses. As a child, she wore her hair in two pigtails, and during her own days as a performing Prism Star, she had long, wavy hair that reached halfway down her back.
As the manager of Pretty Top, Kyoko is known for being strict with the Prism Stars under her care, often chastising them when they fail to meet her standards or do not follow the rules. She is also a very thrifty person who is reluctant to spend more money than necessary. Her strict and sometimes boorish demeanor has been known to cause potential suitors to decline marriage proposals in the past. However, beneath this exterior, she is an honorable person who would never resort to dirty tricks to defeat an opponent, once becoming furious after discovering a rival's stage outfit had been sabotaged. Her focus is consistently on identifying and cultivating the best talent.
Kyoko's past is marked by complex family dynamics. As a child, she was very happy with her father, Kintaro Asechi, and admired his Symphonia designs, wanting to help him complete them to make their family's dreams come true. Unbeknownst to her, her father was paying other competitors to withdraw from Prism Shows, guaranteeing her victories. When he had a rival's outfit ripped before a competition, Kyoko was furious and demanded the culprit be found. Her parents later divorced due to her father's obsession with the Symphonia series, and Kyoko began to despise her mother, Kei, for not letting her go with her father, who promised but never returned for her. After the divorce, her mother trained her relentlessly in Prism Shows, focusing only on perfection and never showing her the lighter, more joyful side of performing. Because of this, even when Kyoko won the title of Prism Queen, she did not smile.
Her primary rival during her performing days was Sonata Kanzaki, whom she considered both a best friend and a rival. Young Sonata, seeing Kyoko's joyless victory, began training on her own to compete alongside her, and from that point on, they became rivals. After Sonata retired to become a mother, Kyoko appeared on television and stated her desire to compete against her once more, which inadvertently led Sonata to train harshly under Kyoko's own mother, a path Kyoko herself had already rejected. Kyoko later co-founded Pretty Top alongside Jun Takigawa. She was previously engaged to a nameless man who never appeared for their wedding ceremony.
In the story of Dear My Future, Jun tries to protect Kyoko from learning the dark secrets about her father's past actions, but he ultimately fails. When Kyoko wavers on allowing her agency's teams to participate in a critical mission to rescue a Prism Star, Jun comforts her and promises to protect her, bringing her back to her usual self. Kyoko later discovers a photograph in her father's journal, delivered to her by Jun from her mother, which reveals that Jun was adopted by her family and is not her blood-related half-brother. Jun tells her he has something important to tell her once everything is over. At the conclusion of the series, following the Road to Symphonia event, Jun proposes to Kyoko at the wedding of Rizumu and Hibiki. Although shocked, she accepts. Wearing her engagement ring, they visit his parents' grave so he can introduce her and report their marriage, and in the final scene of the anime, they stand together closely before the grave with a bouquet of white roses.
Kyoko possesses a strong ability to recognize talent and potential in Prism Stars, and she knows that Jun has the unique ability to see who will become stars above all others. Her own extensive experience as a former Prism Queen and champion gives her deep insight into the world of Prism Shows, allowing her to effectively manage and guide the next generation of performers from her position as the head of Pretty Top.
