Description
Kazuki Kurusu is a 28-year-old professional assassin who works in partnership with his roommate, Rei Suwa. In the field, Kazuki is responsible for gathering intelligence, formulating plans, and carrying out the strategic elements of their missions, relying on his excellent communication skills to infiltrate situations and extract information. He is a capable and lethal fighter, though his role often emphasizes tactical thinking over direct confrontation. In his personal life, he is a stark contrast to his partner, being sociable, energetic, and prone to dramatic emotional displays. He is easily tempted by his vices, which include gambling and pursuing romantic interests with women, yet he is also the primary homemaker in the shared apartment, taking responsibility for cooking, cleaning, and maintaining the household.
Kazuki's cheerful and often irresponsible exterior masks a deep well of personal tragedy and guilt. He grew up as an orphan, never knowing his parents, an experience he explicitly states influenced his path to becoming an assassin. His past is further complicated by the death of his wife, Yuzuko, who was pregnant with their child at the time. Her death was the result of an accident involving an exploding fuel truck during one of his missions, and he has never forgiven himself, carrying immense survivor's guilt. As a form of atonement, he regularly attempts to send a portion of his earnings to his sister-in-law, Karin, though she repeatedly returns the money, refusing to hold him accountable for a tragedy he did not cause. This unresolved grief has left him emotionally vulnerable, and his womanizing is implied to be a way to seek short-term comfort without the risk of genuine emotional intimacy. He often projects a happy-go-lucky persona, acting as a Stepford Smiler to function day-to-day.
The central driver of Kazuki's character arc is the unexpected arrival of a four-year-old girl named Miri, the daughter of one of his and Rei's assassination targets. After their mission, Kazuki impulsively tells Miri that he is her father to protect her from the truth, and she quickly settles into their lives, calling him "Kazuki-papa". Initially, he is hesitant and tries to find someone else to take care of her, believing their dangerous lifestyle is no place for a child. However, he rapidly becomes a devoted, if overly enthusiastic and inexperienced, parental figure. The role brings out a fiercely protective, and at times comically overreactive, side of him; he threatens horrific torture on anyone he believes might harm her, panics at the thought of her having a childhood friendship with a boy, and has elaborate imagine spots of disastrous future scenarios. His primary motivation shifts from completing contracts to ensuring Miri's safety and happiness, ultimately leading him to make the decision with Rei to dismantle the criminal organization they work for and leave their lives as hitmen behind for good.
His key relationships define his journey. He and his partner Rei Suwa operate on a Red Oni, Blue Oni dynamic, where Kazuki's expressive warmth contrasts with Rei's stoic coolness. Despite Rei owning the apartment, Kazuki is the one who cares for him, cooking meals, cleaning, and chiding him for his reclusive gaming habits. For Rei, who is largely isolated and robotic due to a traumatic upbringing, Kazuki is effectively his only close friend. The pair's dynamic evolves from strictly professional partners to genuine co-parents and a found family with Miri. Kazuki's relationship with Miri is the catalyst for his entire development; her unconditional love and need for care force him to confront his own pain and move beyond his life of violence. Through her, he learns to build a meaningful domestic life, moving from an irresponsible bachelor to an overprotective and devoted father.
Throughout the narrative, Kazuki undergoes significant development. He starts as a man trapped by his past, using atonement and hedonism as coping mechanisms. His journey with Miri forces him to become responsible, and in the end, he chooses to abandon the assassin profession entirely. In the series epilogue, he and Rei open a small diner where he presumably works as a cook, having gone legit. While he is reformed from his life of murder, he is not fully tamed, as his womanizing habits are implied to persist, much to the chagrin of an older Miri. His abilities beyond combat are notable: he is a supreme chef whose meals are adored by his family, and his domestic skills are balanced by his strategic mind and social acumen, which were essential to his success as an assassin.
