Description
Combatant No. 1 is a member of the Kawasaki branch of the evil organization Florsheim in the anime Tentai Senshi Sunred. He is visually identical to his colleague, Combatant No. 2, distinguished only by the number one written on his forehead. Like all combatants, he wears a uniform consisting of black tights and white shorts. His primary role is to serve as a general-purpose subordinate to General Vamp, the leader of the Kawasaki branch, and to assist the various monsters who come to fight the hero Sunred.
In terms of personality, Combatant No. 1 is portrayed as a dutiful and hardworking member of the organization, though he often finds himself in a position that is more pitiable than villainous. He is one of the most frequently recurring members of Florsheim and is consequently a regular target of Sunred's brutal, one-sided beatings. While the monsters take turns dueling the hero, Combatant No. 1 is present for almost every encounter, dealing with the aftermath and often running errands not only for the Florsheim monsters but also for Sunred himself. Despite the constant physical abuse, he maintains a sense of normalcy, as the organization provides benefits such as full vacation time and employee training. He shows an interest in fashion, which is presented as a characteristic of a new generation of combatants.
Combatant No. 1 has a few key relationships that define his place in the story. He is clearly subordinate to General Vamp, who is the kind-hearted and competent leader of the branch. He also works alongside the various monsters of Florsheim, such as the giant tiger-man Armor Tiger and the mummy, taking orders from them and helping to appease them. While he does not seem to harbor any ill will towards the monsters, he does try to avoid them during after-parties following battles. His central dynamic is with Sunred, the hero he is meant to fight. Unlike the dramatic rivalries found in other stories, Combatant No. 1 is simply on the receiving end of Sunred's violent temper and verbal abuse, serving as a regular punching bag and an outlet for the hero's frustrations.
One of the more notable aspects of Combatant No. 1 is his surprising level of physical durability. Despite being a low-ranking mook, his body is quite muscular, and he is capable of withstanding punches from Sunred, who can defeat most monsters with a single blow. Although Sunred is likely not using his full strength against a combatant, the fact that he can endure such attacks at all sets him apart from ordinary humans. He does not possess any unique special attacks or superpowers; his role is to be a reliable, everyday presence in the absurd conflict between the hero and the evil organization.
Over the course of the series, Combatant No. 1 does not undergo a dramatic character arc so much as he exemplifies the series' comedic, slice-of-life approach to the superhero genre. His daily struggles include being beaten up, running chores, and managing his relationships, which reveals a deep complexity in a character who is essentially a faceless soldier. He is shown to have a life outside of his duties for Florsheim, as he is interested in fashion and, like his colleague, has a girlfriend, indicating that he maintains a normal personal life despite his job. His development is subtle, rooted in the ongoing gag of his suffering and the quiet dignity with which he endures the hardships of being a combatant for an evil organization that is not particularly evil.
