OVA
Description
Kogorō Mōri is a private detective who operates the Mōri Detective Agency from his home in Beika Town. He is a former detective of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, having served under Inspector Megure, and left the force to run his own agency. He is the father of Ran Mōri and is separated from his wife, Eri Kisaki, a prominent lawyer. He attended Teitan High School alongside his wife and later graduated from Beika University, where he was the champion of the judo club. In the OVA Detective Conan Magic File 3, Kogorō is shown playing Mahjong with his friends, which reflects his ordinary leisure activities and his tendency to prioritize personal enjoyment over work. His personality is marked by laziness, a short temper, and a fondness for alcohol, gambling, and attractive women, often leading him to make careless and incorrect deductions in his cases. Despite these flaws, he possesses a strong sense of justice and is fiercely protective of his family, particularly his daughter Ran and his estranged wife Eri, revealing a devoted and caring side when they are in danger. He is highly motivated by financial gain and personal gratification, but his deeper motivation is to uphold justice and safeguard those he loves. His role in the story is that of a comic relief character and an unwitting front for the detective work of Conan Edogawa, who solves cases while Kogorō is unconscious, earning him the public moniker Sleeping Kogorō. Key relationships include his daughter Ran, whom he raises as a single father with genuine affection despite his gruff demeanor; his separated wife Eri, with whom he shares unresolved romantic tension and mutual care; and Conan, whom he treats as a nuisance but unknowingly depends on for his reputation. He also maintains friendly ties with former colleagues like Inspector Megure. Over the course of the series, Kogorō develops from a bumbling, ineffective investigator into a nationally recognized detective, though his reputation is largely built on Conan's interventions. He occasionally demonstrates genuine deductive ability when personal stakes are high, indicating latent competence. Among his notable abilities are his expertise in judo, honed during his university years, and his marksmanship, which he developed as a police officer. These physical skills contrast sharply with his usual lackluster investigative performance, making him a complex figure with both comedic and heroic dimensions.
