Description
Kaitou Kid, also known as the Phantom Thief, is a renowned and elusive jewel thief who appears in the anime special Detective Conan: Kid in Trap Island. Behind the white tuxedo and top hat is the teenager Kaito Kuroba, a second-year high school student who took on the Kid persona to investigate the disappearance and death of his father, Toichi Kuroba, who was the original Kaitou Kid. His driving motivation is to find a legendary gem called Pandora, which is said to shed a tear of immortality when a specific comet passes, as the criminal organization that murdered his father is also searching for it. Kaitou Kid steals valuable jewels not for wealth, but to examine them under the moonlight for the telltale glow of Pandora, after which he typically returns them.
In terms of personality, Kaitou Kid is infamous for his showy, confident, and almost arrogant attitude. He loves to turn his heists into grand spectacles, sending advance notices to the police and performing elaborate tricks that often lead them on wild goose chases. Despite his criminal label, he possesses a strong personal code of honor. He hates to see innocent people hurt and will go out of his way to protect others, a trait that is prominently displayed in Kid in Trap Island when he looks after the Detective Boys. He is also a known charmer with a soft spot for his fans, and he has been known to cancel heists if the police try to bar the public from attending. A notable and unusual weakness is his intense ichthyophobia, or fear of fish, which is a recurring comedic trait.
The story of Kid in Trap Island places the thief in a unique situation. After successfully stealing a jewel called the Artemis' Teardrop from a heavily guarded island, his escape is thwarted. The Detective Boys, hoping to capture him, accidentally destroy his hang glider, leaving him stranded on the island with them. To avoid being caught, he assumes the disguise of Shinichi Kudo, the famous detective, a transformation he can easily pull off due to their close physical resemblance. While protecting the children from the island's dangers, including wild boars and crocodiles, he also unravels a deeper plot. He discovers that the owner of the jewel, President Nezu, is involved in illegal smuggling of firearms and counterfeit art, and had planned to use the theft to cover up the fact he possessed the real jewel.
His key relationship in this story, and in the wider franchise, is with Conan Edogawa, who is Shinichi Kudo in a child's body. While they are rivals, with Conan constantly trying to arrest him, the two share a deep mutual respect. In Kid in Trap Island, they form an unlikely alliance. Conan offers a deal to Kid: return the jewel in exchange for Kid's help in keeping the children safe and then being allowed to walk free. Kid accepts, and his development throughout the OVA highlights his protective nature and his willingness to cooperate with his rival when a greater threat or an innocent life is at stake. By the end, after confirming the Artemis' Teardrop is not his target Pandora, he returns it to Conan as agreed and makes his escape by boat, even showing delight at a fish that jumps onto his lap, a rare moment of overcoming his phobia.
Kaitou Kid is defined by his remarkable abilities, which border on the supernatural. He is a genius with an estimated IQ of 400 and is a master of disguise, able to flawlessly imitate anyone's appearance, voice, and mannerisms after only a brief encounter. He is also an extraordinary stage magician, skilled in sleight of hand, escapology, and illusion. His signature tools include a hang-glider concealed within his cape, a pistol that fires sharp playing cards, and various smoke and flash bombs. In Kid in Trap Island, these abilities are all on display, from his masterful disguise as Shinichi to his agility in avoiding wild animals and using his card gun to disarm traps, cementing his status as a brilliant and resourceful phantom thief.
