Description
Bérénice is a character from the Pokémon anime, appearing as a recurring rival during the series set in the Unova region. She is a young girl with long, wavy green hair and a determined expression, and she holds the official title of a Class C Pokémon Connoisseur. Her Japanese name is Cabernet, and her English name is Burgundy, both of which are references to varieties of wine, continuing a naming theme common among Connoisseur characters.

Bérénice is defined above all by her intense, self-proclaimed rivalry with Cilan, a fellow Pokémon Connoisseur and one of the main characters. Her background reveals that she first challenged Cilan to a Gym battle in Striaton City, where he served as a Gym Leader, and suffered a decisive loss. She became convinced that Cilan mocked her Pokémon during or after that battle, an insult that she took very personally. This single event became the driving force behind her entire journey. She decided to become a Pokémon Connoisseur specifically to gain the knowledge and authority to challenge Cilan’s evaluations and to eventually defeat him in a battle of skills, seeking to settle the score and restore her pride.

In terms of personality, Bérénice presents herself as haughty, sharp-tongued, and exceedingly critical. She often comes across as disdainful and arrogant, believing her judgment of the compatibility between a Trainer and their Pokémon to be superior, despite her low Class C ranking. This is most evident in her first appearance, where she systematically criticizes Ash’s Pokémon team, only to have each of her assessments refuted when the Pokémon themselves retaliate against her. She is also bold and audacious, once threatening to reorganize Ash’s entire team if she won a battle against him. Beneath this abrasive exterior, however, lies a deeply insecure and vengeful temperament. Her entire motivation is rooted in a past humiliation, and she is obsessed with the idea of revenge against Cilan, even wishing for his defeat in tournaments where she is not his opponent. This single-mindedness often blinds her to her own shortcomings.

Despite her ambitions, Bérénice’s role in the story is that of an overconfident underdog who consistently fails to achieve her goals. She frequently enters competitions but rarely wins. She loses a 2-on-2 battle against Cilan in their first encounter, despite her confident declaration. She later participates in the Club Battle tournament in Nimbasa Town, where she is defeated by Ash and his Palpitoad. She also enters the Donamite tournament, a competition for battling Pokémon, only to lose in the first round to Iris and her Excadrill. Finally, she takes part in the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup and is again eliminated in the very first round by a Trainer named Nico. A notable anecdote states that she is the only one of the Unova rivals in the anime to never advance past the first round of any tournament she enters.

Her key relationships are primarily defined by her rivalry. Her dynamic with Cilan is the core of her character; she constantly tries to one-up him, critiques his abilities (such as calling him a bad cook), and reacts with frustration every time he succeeds. Conversely, her relationship with Ash and Iris is more about using them as benchmarks or obstacles. She has a dismissive attitude towards Ash’s unconventional training style, yet she battles him twice and loses both times. Her encounters with Iris also end in defeat. Through these repeated losses, a subtle development can be observed. While she remains haughty for most of the series, by the end of the Donamite tournament, she is shown begrudgingly admitting that Cilan deserves his high rank as a Class A Connoisseur, suggesting a reluctant acceptance of his abilities, even if her competitive drive remains.

As a Class C Connoisseur, Bérénice possesses the basic ability to evaluate a Trainer's compatibility with their Pokémon, a skill she uses to justify her criticisms. However, her low rank implies her assessments are often flawed or too rigid compared to more skilled Connoisseurs like Cilan. In one episode, she goes as far as to impersonate a Class S Connoisseur by attaching a sticker to her badge and wearing a disguise, a desperate attempt to be taken seriously, which ultimately fails comically.

Her notable abilities as a Trainer are reflected in her team of Pokémon, which she assembles with the goal of defeating Cilan. Her first and signature Pokémon is a Dewott named Mateloutre. She trains it with specific strategies, teaching it powerful and unconventional moves like Ice Beam and Retaliate for tournaments. Her other Pokémon include a Sawsbuck, a Stoutland, and a Darmanitan, each of which she deploys in different competitions but all of which end up on the losing side of her battles. Her journey in the anime is a classic story of an ambitious rival whose reach consistently exceeds her grasp, making her a source of both conflict and comic relief in the Unova saga.
