Description
The character known as Analyzer is formally designated the R-9 Autonomous Type Shipborne Analysis Unit, often referred to by its preferred nickname, Analyzer, or its model code AU09. It is an autonomous robot assigned to the United Nations Cosmo Navy battleship Yamato. Analyzer is a uniquely modified and greatly enhanced version of the standard AU08 robot type, created specifically for the long voyage to the planet Iscandar. Its artificial intelligence operates on a highly advanced quantum computer cluster system, which allows a complex and independent personality to emerge naturally rather than being artificially programmed.

Analyzer possesses a compact, non-humanoid design featuring a hemispherical head, two arms mounted just below it, and two short legs that end in wide, multi-wheeled feet. Small thrusters are placed at strategic points on its body for maneuverability in zero gravity. Among its many built-in tools, a high-powered laser is located in its left index finger, and its other fingertips can extend on cables for grasping objects or for direct computer interface. Its internal sensors are capable of reading chemical compositions, temperature, life signs, and rates of decay in non-biological materials. For heavy labor or combat situations, its speed, strength, and agility can be augmented with a large exoskeleton.

The official duty of Analyzer is as a crew member in charge of analysis. Its regular station is a specially designed cradle on the Yamato main bridge, where it provides support to the ship's mainframe computer and monitors internal and external sensors. In this capacity, Analyzer plays a critical role in the mission. Its expertise with computer systems is repeatedly demonstrated, most notably when it uses insights gained from studying a captured enemy robot to deactivate a massive drill missile lodged inside the ship and later to create a computer virus that disables an entire battalion of invading soldiers.

Analyzer expresses eagerness to be of service throughout its duties. Although it speaks with a robotic monotone, it is capable of displaying a wide range of human emotions verbally and through body language and behavior. It is proud of its robotic abilities, going so far as to label them superior to biological lifeforms. This pride is tempered by a literal worldview that can sometimes fluster its human companions. A notable aspect of its personality is a contemplative side, as its interactions with another mechanical being motivate it to begin considering the nature of its own existence and its place in the universe.

Analyzer forms several key relationships among the crew. It shares an easy and frequent collaborative rapport with Lieutenant Kaoru Niimi, working with her on critical technical missions. Over time, it also starts to form a friendship with Doctor Sakezo Sado, who, despite occasionally being flustered by the robot's unusual interest in human affairs, accepts its company. It is important to note that this version of Analyzer, from the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 continuity, differs significantly from its counterpart in the original 1970s series. In the original continuity, Analyzer is depicted as a wisecracking robot who joins the crew to prove himself, but is also known for sexually harassing crew member Yuki Mori, whom he is in love with, a trait completely absent in the 2199 remake. In the remake, Analyzer has no such relationship with Yuki and is instead integrated into the ship's system as an independent processor.
