Description
Yasuo Nanbu is a crew member of the Yamato who serves as the ship’s chief gunner. He comes from a family of industrialists; he is the heir to Nanbu Heavy Industries, a major munitions company that produced the Yamato’s main artillery and the Cosmo Gun. Despite his family’s expectations for him to take over the business, he chose to join the military and was selected for the Yamato Plan over his parents’ objections. Hailing from Tokyo, he holds the rank of lieutenant junior grade (second-grade space lieutenant) in the original series and its remakes.

Nanbu is a competent and dedicated officer, responsible for managing the performance of the ship’s cannons, missiles, and other weapons to support tactical operations. He works closely with the tactical division under the command of Susumu Kodai. His primary role is to ensure the Yamato’s firepower is used effectively in battle, and he is often seen at the weapons control station during combat. He is known for his steady demeanor and loyalty to the crew.

In terms of personality, Nanbu is generally calm and professional, though he can show frustration or concern during intense situations. He does not have the same brashness as some of the younger officers and tends to approach his duties with a methodical, duty-driven attitude. He has a strong sense of responsibility, especially given his family’s connection to the weapons he operates.

His key relationships include his fellow tactical division members and the senior officers of the Yamato, particularly Captain Okita and Susumu Kodai. He also has a strained relationship with his father, Kozo Nanbu, who later becomes involved with the Desarium faction. In later story arcs, Nanbu rebels against his father and joins the anti-Desarium resistance on Earth, using his knowledge of the Nanbu family’s military assets to aid the Yamato crew.

Over the course of the series, Nanbu develops from a relatively background gunnery officer into a more active participant in critical missions, especially in the later films and remakes where he takes on a larger role in the fight against new enemies. His survival across all versions of the story makes him one of the longest-serving crew members; he is noted as the only Yamato crew member who never dies in any iteration.

Nanbu’s notable abilities include his expertise in naval gunnery, his knowledge of the Nanbu Heavy Industries weapon systems, and his tactical understanding of ship-to-ship combat. He is also skilled at coordinating fire from multiple batteries and maintaining the ship’s armament under pressure. In the revived 2199 continuity, he is described as a capable officer with a logical mind and a sense of duty inherited from his family’s legacy.
