Description
Philip is a young detective and the partner of Shotaro Hidari at the Narumi Detective Office in the city of Fuuto. Together they transform into Kamen Rider Double, with Philip providing the right half of the merged form. His original identity is Raito Sonozaki, the youngest child of the Sonozaki family, a wealthy household that secretly ran the organization known as Museum. Before the beginning of his story, he was kept under his family's control and used in the creation of artificial Gaia Memories, devices that grant their users superhuman abilities. In that time he lost his memories and most of his sense of self, existing almost as data rather than as a person. He was given the name Philip by the detective Sokichi Narumi, who rescued him and taught him that a person can decide his own path in life.
Philip's personality is marked by calm intelligence, intense curiosity, and a love of knowledge. He frequently describes unfamiliar matters as interesting and is shown collecting and organizing clues, often writing on a blackboard to arrange his thoughts. Having spent much of his early life isolated, he lacks ordinary life experience and can appear childlike or emotionally distant, yet he is sincere and gradually learns to care deeply about other people. As the intellectual counterpart in the partnership, he tends to approach problems through logic and data, while his partner acts on instinct and emotion.
In the crossover film OOO, Den-O, All Riders: Let's Go Kamen Riders, Philip appears alongside Shotaro Hidari as Kamen Rider W. The film presents a world in which the Shocker organization has taken over Japan and altered history, with many heroes defeated or captured. Philip is among the Kamen Riders who assemble to resist Shocker, and he joins the final battle against Shocker's forces and its Great Leader. His part in the film is that of an ally within a large ensemble rather than a central figure, but he takes part in the climactic fight as the right half of Kamen Rider Double, using the duo's Gaia Memory powers in combat.
Within the wider story, Philip's motivations are tied to the pursuit of truth and the protection of Fuuto from Dopant crimes, cases caused by people empowered through Gaia Memories. Over time, his goals become more personal as he chooses to live as a human being rather than remain a detached collection of data. This is reflected in his relationships. Shotaro Hidari is his closest partner; during transformation, Philip's consciousness enters Shotaro's body so that the two act as one Rider. Akiko Narumi manages the detective office and supports the pair in their work. Sokichi Narumi, the founder of the agency, serves as an important mentor figure, having named Philip and encouraged his independence. Philip's family, especially his father Ryubee, his sisters Saeko and Wakana, and the wider Museum organization, are central to his past and to the conflicts he faces, since he was once used as a tool by the same people he later fights.
Philip's development runs from detachment to understanding. Having been treated as something less than human, he gradually comes to comprehend the feelings of others and to define himself on his own terms, declaring that he is a human being, a detective, and a Kamen Rider. During the events of the main series he is lost in the final conflict but later restored through a body given to him by his sister Wakana, allowing him to reunite with his partner and continue protecting the city.
His notable abilities stem from his connection to the Earth's memory. He can access what is known as the Gaia Library, a vast repository of information that lets him research almost any person, object, or phenomenon with supercomputer-like speed. This makes him a powerful analytical asset in detective work and combat. When transforming, he uses Gaia Memories and merges his mind with Shotaro's body to form the right side of Kamen Rider Double, allowing the pair to fight using combinations such as the CycloneJoker form, in which he and his partner combine speed and martial ability. Through this partnership, he acts as the mind of Kamen Rider Double, supporting the fight against Dopants and the enemies who threaten the city.
