Description
Kiyoshi Hatanaka is a minor but memorable character who appears during the initial Onion Alien mission in the Gantz manga. He is introduced as a member of the Yakuza, the Japanese criminal underworld, and is a close associate of a fellow gangster named Hiroshi Hatanaka. Kiyoshi and Hiroshi arrived in the mysterious Gantz room together after being killed in a gang-related shootout, with their clothing still bearing the bullet holes that ended their lives. Their shared background as hardened criminals immediately sets them apart from other newly deceased individuals like the high school students Kei Kurono and Masaru Kato.
In terms of personality, Kiyoshi Yoshioka is portrayed as a cynical and experienced gangster who is largely unfazed by the bizarre circumstances of the Gantz room. He displays a dismissive and uninterested demeanor, showing little curiosity or fear about the black sphere or the weapons provided to them. Unlike his partner Hiroshi, who is aggressive and impulsive, Kiyoshi is more reserved and observational, though he shares Hiroshi's ruthless and morally detached worldview. He does not attempt to stop Hiroshi when the latter drags the naked and confused Kei Kishimoto into a back room with clear malicious intent, demonstrating his acceptance of casual cruelty and violence. His motivations are simple and self-serving, becoming most engaged only when the possibility of a ten million yen prize is mentioned by another hunter, Joichiro Nishi. At that point, he eagerly joins the hunt for the alien targets, driven by financial gain rather than any sense of duty or survival.
Kiyoshi's role in the story is that of a secondary antagonist and a representative of ordinary human depravity within the Gantz game. He and Hiroshi serve as a contrast to the more heroic instincts of characters like Masaru Kato, who tries to protect the vulnerable and show restraint. During the mission to hunt the Onion Aliens in the streets of Tokyo, Kiyoshi actively participates in the chase and the subsequent brutal attack on a small, childlike alien. He shows no remorse as his partner Hiroshi dismembers and executes the helpless creature, only expressing frustration that his expensive suit has been ruined by blood and alien viscera. His key relationships are primarily with his criminal partner Hiroshi, with whom he acts in concert, and antagonistically with Kato, whose moral objections he ignores.
The character undergoes no development, as his arc is abruptly cut short. After the adult Onion Alien appears to avenge its child, Hiroshi attacks it and is quickly overpowered. In the ensuing chaos, as the other hunters try to shoot the large alien, it uses Hiroshi's body as a shield, causing him to be blown in half by friendly fire. Kiyoshi then attempts to fight back, firing his weapon, but the alien retaliates in a swift counterattack, disemboweling him and tearing off his arm. He collapses and bleeds to death on the street, becoming yet another casualty of the mission. Despite his lack of supernatural talents or advanced skills with the Gantz weaponry, Kiyoshi is shown to be proficient with a conventional firearm and physically fit, though these abilities prove useless against the alien threat.
