Description
Jouichirou Nishi is a middle school student who becomes a veteran participant in the Tokyo Gantz team, having been active for over a year before the main events of the story begin. His entry into this world comes after he dies by falling from a rooftop while fleeing from police officers following a shoplifting incident. He is known for his cold, calm, and calculating demeanor, often maintaining a collected mood even in dire situations. Nishi operates from a deeply selfish and Social Darwinist perspective, believing that only those strong and ruthless enough to survive deserve to do so. He has little regard for the lives of other participants, viewing them as expendable tools or obstacles that might steal his points. This philosophy leads him to manipulate new players by feeding them false information about the Gantz game, such as claiming it is a television show with a large cash prize, so that they will recklessly engage aliens and die, allowing him to swoop in and claim the points for himself. He prefers to fight using the stealth capabilities of the Gantz suit, remaining invisible and observing until the opportune moment to strike. Despite this antisocial behavior, he is the first character to reveal crucial information about the nature of the game, including the existence of a "Katastrophe" countdown to a doomsday event, and he runs a website dedicated to sharing coded information about Gantz. Gantz itself formally refers to him as Mr. Nishi, a unique form of address compared to how it speaks of others.
Nishi's personality is rooted in a troubled past and a deep-seated misanthropy. He endured severe bullying at his school, which escalated to the point where his classmates voted to expel him from the classroom and physically threw him out of a window. Even before this, his behavior at home was unsettling, as he would kill animals and stuff their heads in bins. His mother eventually died by suicide, an event that profoundly affected him and seems to be a source of his hidden vulnerabilities; in his moments of death, he desperately cries out for his mother. This history of ostracization and trauma fueled his hatred for society, which he describes as being like cattle that cannot think for themselves. He takes a sadistic pleasure in watching others die and has been shown using a Gantz weapon to kill a cat for his own amusement. However, his character is not without contradictions. Despite his cruelty, he chose to spare one female classmate who had shown him kindness, and he once saved a young boy from an explosion, questioning his own motives for doing so.
In the story, Nishi plays the role of an antagonistic source of knowledge and a foil to the more altruistic protagonists, Kei Kurono and Masaru Kato. During the mission against the Tanaka Alien, his overconfidence leads to his suit being heavily damaged, and after begging for help that comes too late, he succumbs to his injuries. Later, at Kurono's request, another hunter uses a hundred points to resurrect Nishi. Upon his return, he shows subtle signs of being less openly hostile, though he still primarily operates alone. He has a notable relationship with another veteran named Shion Izumi, as they were teammates on a previous Gantz team before Izumi had his memories wiped; Nishi is cordial and respectful towards him, a stark contrast to his interactions with everyone else. His abilities are considerable, focused on technical skill and tactical use of equipment rather than raw physical power. He is highly proficient with all Gantz weaponry and is the only character shown to successfully hack into the Gantz system to insert himself into a giant mecha for a major battle. His combat style relies heavily on the suit's invisibility device and his own patience, allowing him to consistently earn high scores, including over one hundred points in a single mission. His development sees him evolve from a seemingly standard cowardly bully into a more complex figure whose cruel actions are partly a product of his environment, and he eventually becomes obsessed with preparing for the Katastrophe, believing that whoever defeats the invading aliens will rule the world. His final death occurs when his giant robot is destroyed during the assault on the alien mothership.
