Description
Dylan Gould is the CEO of the powerful investment firm Hotchkiss Gould Investments. He is a wealthy, refined individual with a notable hobby of collecting exotic cars, a pursuit he claims helps keep him sane. He presents himself as charming and generous, particularly towards his personal assistant, Carly Spencer, whom he affectionately calls his duchess.
His background reveals a deep, secret connection to the Decepticons. His father was a NASA accountant who, in the early 1970s, was recruited by the Decepticon Soundwave to manipulate the space program's budget. The goal was to make further moon landings impossible, thereby preventing humanity from discovering a lost Cybertronian spacecraft on the lunar surface. Soundwave saw a greater ambition in the young Dylan, and the son eventually inherited his father's role as a human liaison for the Decepticons. His primary motivation is survival and the acquisition of power. He is not driven by loyalty to the Decepticon cause but by a pragmatic, self-serving desire to be on the winning side. He believes that by aligning with the stronger force, he can secure his own freedom and privileged status, even if it means betraying his own species.
In the story, Dylan uses his professional relationship with Carly to get close to her boyfriend, Sam Witwicky, who has a history with the Autobots. He arranges a job interview for Sam and gives Carly a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, which is secretly the Decepticon Soundwave in disguise. When the Decepticons launch their final assault, Dylan reveals his true allegiance. He takes Carly hostage and forces Sam to wear a Decepticon watch that transmits information and causes him pain, demanding Sam learn the Autobots' battle plans. After learning the Autobots intend to surrender, Dylan signals Starscream to destroy their escape spacecraft.
His key relationships are defined by manipulation and a desire for control. He is possessive of Carly, viewing her as part of his arrangements. His relationship with Sam is one of antagonism, as Sam represents the heroic resistance to the Decepticons he serves. With his Decepticon contacts, such as Soundwave and Megatron, Dylan positions himself as a valuable asset. However, the Decepticons ultimately view him as a disposable tool, with Megatron dismissively referring to him as an insect operative. His role as a traitor is complete when he explains to Carly that the Decepticons plan to enslave humanity to rebuild Cybertron, and he has ensured his own safety in this new world order.
Throughout the film, Dylan appears confident and in control, but he shows signs of being disturbed by the brutality of the Decepticon invasion. He is also prone to vanity and frustration, particularly when his personal property is destroyed. His development sees him go from a seemingly benevolent boss to a desperate collaborator. In the climax, with the Decepticons losing the battle, he still tries to reactivate the control pillar for the space bridge, believing there is no future for him other than the one he has helped create. He confronts Sam one last time, arrogantly proclaiming he has saved another world, only to be struck down and pushed into the pillar he sought to control, where he is fatally electrocuted. His notable abilities are not physical or combative; rather, they lie in his immense financial resources, his wide-reaching connections, and his talent for manipulation, allowing him to wield influence over both humans and Decepticons to further his own selfish agenda.
