Description
Baby Face, whose real name in the novelization is Zimmerman, is a young and inexperienced soldier serving as a member of the NEST (Nonbiological Extraterrestrial Species Treaty) team under the command of Colonel William Lennox. He earns the nickname Baby Face, which appears only in the film credits and is not spoken in the film itself, because he has not yet developed the calm, stoic demeanor expected of soldiers facing mortal danger from giant alien robots.
Personality wise, Baby Face is initially nervous and visibly shaken by the sheer scale of the Decepticon threat. When his team flies into Decepticon-occupied Chicago aboard Ospreys and comes under attack from Starscream, he becomes especially anxious after watching two of the helicopters get blown out of the sky. Despite this fear, he possesses a deep well of courage. He is the first to volunteer when Lennox asks for soldiers to fly into the heart of the battle. Over the course of the mission, his bravery surfaces and he proves himself willing to take decisive action even against overwhelming odds.
His motivation is rooted in a sense of duty and a desire to contribute meaningfully to the fight. He does not seek glory but instead wants to support his team and protect humanity. As an inexperienced soldier, he also aims to prove his worth to his more hardened comrades.
In the story, Baby Face functions as one of the several unnamed or barely named soldiers who accompany Lennox during the final military assault in Chicago. His most notable action occurs during the ambush on Shockwave. The team parachutes down onto a group of Decepticons from above. Baby Face manages to land directly on Shockwave's back, where he fires an explosive device into the Decepticon's neck before falling off onto a nearby wrecked taxi. Lennox immediately congratulates him on a job well done as the rest of the team opens fire. Later, Baby Face and the other soldiers assist Optimus Prime in his fight against Sentinel Prime by shooting at the rogue Autobot.
His key relationships are primarily professional. He serves under Colonel Lennox, who commands the squad with a mix of authority and camaraderie. He also works alongside other NEST soldiers such as Epps and the rest of Lennox's team, though no individual friendships are developed on screen.
Baby Face undergoes a minor but recognizable development arc. He begins the mission as the most visibly frightened member of the squad, yet by the end he has performed a courageous and effective combat feat that earns him praise from his commanding officer. This transformation from a nervous rookie to a brave soldier is his primary character growth.
His notable abilities include a willingness to take high-risk actions, such as being first to volunteer for a dangerous insertion, and the skill to successfully parachute onto a moving Decepticon and land a precise explosive shot. He also demonstrates resilience, recovering from his initial fear to fight effectively alongside his teammates.
