Description
Kotaro Minami, the young man who transforms into Kamen Rider Black, appears in Kamen Rider Decade as a version of the character from a parallel world rather than a direct continuation of his original series. In the World of Black, his history closely follows his classic origin: he was a nineteen-year-old captured by the secret cult Gorgom and surgically altered into a cyborg intended to become their Century King, the Black Sun. He escaped the final brainwashing stage and turned the Kingstone implanted within his body into a source of power, allowing him to transform into Kamen Rider Black to oppose the organization that created him.
Personality-wise, Kotaro is depicted as a stoic and battle-hardened warrior who carries a heavy sense of tragedy. Forced to fight his own foster brother, Nobuhiko Akizuki, who became the monstrous Shadow Moon, he is deeply serious, unwavering in his justice, and initially solitary. This makes him highly wary of Tsukasa Kadoya, the Kamen Rider Decade, whom he initially attacks on sight, perceiving the traveller from another dimension as a threat to his own world. His core motivation is the protection of his reality and the continuation of his personal war against the forces of evil, a duty he undertakes with grim resolve.
His role in the overarching story of Kamen Rider Decade is tied to the convergence of parallel dimensions. He represents the legacy of the older Kamen Riders within the series' celebration of the franchise. When the World of Black and the World of RX merge, he encounters an alternate version of himself who has evolved into Kamen Rider Black RX. Working alongside this counterpart and eventually allying with Decade against the Dai-Shocker organization, he demonstrates a willingness to cooperate when the greater multiverse is at stake, though he does so without losing his serious nature.
His key relationships are defined by these conflicts. The tragic loss of his brother Nobuhiko to Shadow Moon remains the defining emotional wound of his life. His initial hostility toward Kamen Rider Decade eventually gives way to a grudging alliance based on necessity. The encounter with his alternate self, the Kotaro from the World of RX, provides a unique look at the divergent paths his life could have taken. Throughout these interactions, his character does not undergo significant change in Decade; instead, his presence reinforces the themes of resilience, sacrifice, and the burdens that define a Kamen Rider.
As a fighter, Kotaro Minami possesses the full abilities of Kamen Rider Black. He transforms by focusing the energy of his Kingstone, which grants him tremendous superhuman strength, speed, and jumping ability. He is a highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant and his signature finishing move is the Rider Kick, a powerful flying kick amplified by the energy of his belt. He rides the intelligent motorcycle Battle Hopper, which acts as a loyal partner in combat. His fighting style is direct and brutal, reflecting the harsher tone of his origins and his no-nonsense approach to dispensing justice.
