Description
In the Cowboy Bebop episode My Funny Valentine, a character named Bacchus appears as a minor antagonist in Faye Valentine's backstory. He is the doctor who awakens Faye from her cryogenic sleep, a moment that sets the course for her life as a bounty hunter. The name Bacchus is a direct reference to the Roman god of wine and revelry, and the character embraces this grandiose self-comparison, boastfully claiming to be the Bacchus who drowned more humans than Neptune.

Bacchus is a deeply unpleasant and predatory figure who runs what appears to be a cryogenic medical facility. His personality is marked by arrogance, greed, and a callous disregard for his patient. From the moment Faye regains consciousness, his behavior is inappropriate and invasive. He is shown getting uncomfortably close to her body, leering at her while asking his assistant questions to which he already knows the answers. This introduction establishes him as someone who derives a sense of power from the utter vulnerability of his patients.

The character's primary role in the story is to be the agent of Faye's misfortune. After awakening her, he and his assistant, Miss Manley, immediately inform Faye that she is over 28 million Woolongs in debt for her medical treatment and storage. This financial bombshell is delivered before she can even fully comprehend her situation, effectively making her a debtor the moment she returns to life. By doing this, Bacchus is the catalyst for Faye's entire future as a grifter and bounty hunter, forever tying her identity to a crushing debt she does not remember incurring.

Motivations for Bacchus are purely mercenary and self-serving. There is no indication of any medical ethics or genuine care for his patient. Instead, he treats Faye as a commodity from which to extract maximum profit. His key relationship is solely with Faye as her antagonist and creditor, and he has no direct interaction with the main cast of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, or Radical Edward. The character does not undergo any development or appear beyond this flashback sequence. He has no notable physical or combat abilities; his power is derived entirely from his authority over the cryogenic facility and the legal system that supports his exorbitant fees.
