Description
Abdul Hakim, who also goes by the code name Snoop, is a character from the anime Cowboy Bebop. He serves as the primary antagonist in the episode Stray Dog Strut, where his actions inadvertently lead to the Bebop crew acquiring their data dog, Ein. Hakim is a tall man with a commanding physical presence, distinguished by a large, bushy black afro, a goatee, and black eyes. His typical attire consists of a brown vest worn over a white collared shirt and a red tee, paired with light-brown pants and brown boots.
Professionally, Hakim is a serial pet thief who steals valuable animals to sell to collectors. His background includes the theft of a genetically engineered "data dog" from an illegal research facility. To evade the authorities and the scientists pursuing him, he undergoes plastic surgery to alter his face. Despite these efforts, a bounty of eight million Woolongs is placed on his head for his crimes.
In terms of personality, Hakim is characterized by an almost tireless persistence and a refusal to give up, even when his plans go awry. His single-minded determination to recover the stolen corgi, despite the dog's small size, lends his pursuit a somewhat comical edge. He is shown to be capable of casual violence, having beaten and knocked unconscious the scientists who cornered him, as well as not paying the doctors who performed his surgery. He also carries a firearm, notably a Desert Eagle, and is skilled in hand-to-hand combat.
Hakim's role in the story is central to the events of his episode. He initially steals the corgi and secures it in a briefcase, which is then stolen from him by an opportunistic young man. The rest of the episode follows a three-way chase on Mars as Hakim pursues the dog, while bounty hunter Spike Spiegel pursues Hakim, and the original scientists from the lab pursue them all. This chaotic chase eventually leads to a confrontation where Spike must choose between saving the dog or capturing Hakim for his bounty. Ultimately, Hakim is arrested by the Intersolar System Police (ISSP) along with the scientists, and the Bebop crew ends up keeping Ein, the data dog, instead of receiving any reward.
Hakim has a few key relationships that define his actions in the episode. His primary motivation is to deliver the stolen "data dog" to an anonymous buyer for a substantial payout. This goal drives his every action, from the initial theft to his relentless chase through the streets of Mars. His adversary is Spike Spiegel, whom he physically fights during the pursuit. He also has a transactional and antagonistic relationship with the scientists who created the dog, as they are as determined to recapture it as he is.
In terms of development, Hakim remains a static character driven by a single, simple goal. His arc is less about personal growth and more about the chaotic consequences of his greed, which ultimately lead to his capture. He displays no notable change in perspective or behavior from beginning to end. His notable abilities include a high level of physical fitness and prowess in martial arts, allowing him to easily dispatch multiple opponents. His appearance, name, and fighting style are a direct homage to the NBA star and actor Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, particularly his role in Bruce Lee's film Game of Death.
