Description
Newton Graceland is a major character from the eleventh Pokémon film, Giratina and the Sky Warrior. He is a talented scholar who has dedicated five years to studying the Reverse World, a mysterious dimension that exists as a mirror to the normal world. Newton is the foremost expert on this realm and on Giratina, the legendary Pokémon that dwells within it.

In terms of personality, Newton is eccentric, enthusiastic, and highly self-assured, often introducing himself as a genius scientist. He can be playful and slightly boastful about his intellect, yet he is fundamentally kind-hearted and responsible. His motivation is driven by a genuine curiosity about the Reverse World and a desire to understand its properties. However, his past actions weigh on him: he once worked with a young assistant named Zero to build a machine that could copy Giratina’s ability to move between dimensions. When Newton realized that the process would ultimately kill Giratina, he destroyed the plans and abandoned the project. This decision caused a rift between him and Zero, who became obsessed with the Reverse World and later turned to villainy.

Newton’s role in the story begins when Ash, Dawn, and the Gratitude Pokémon Shaymin become trapped in the Reverse World. He encounters them there and helps them escape back to the normal world using his technological expertise. As Zero’s plan unfolds—using a stolen Shaymin and a mechanical replica of Giratina to conquer the Reverse World—Newton feels a deep sense of responsibility to stop his former student. He teams up with Ash and his friends, providing crucial knowledge about the Reverse World’s mechanics and using his own inventions to counter Zero’s machines. Key relationships include his past as Zero’s mentor, his alliance with Ash and Dawn, and his close bond with his own Pokémon, a Shieldon, which accompanies him throughout the film.

Newton undergoes a clear development during the movie. He starts as a somewhat isolated researcher, content to observe from a distance, but his encounter with Ash and Dawn forces him to confront the consequences of his earlier work. He moves from regret to active intervention, helping to deactivate Zero’s massive vessel, the Megalith, and rescuing Zero from a frozen mecha. By the film’s end, he has reaffirmed his commitment to protecting the balance between worlds.

Notable abilities include his deep scientific knowledge of dimensional physics, his skill in inventing advanced technology, and his use of a specialized eye-analyzer that allows him to observe and analyze battles and energy signatures. He also operates a variety of gadgets and robotic arms that he built himself. His Shieldon is a capable partner that assists him in research and minor combat situations. Newton’s inventions, such as the original design for the Megalith and the mechanical Giratina, demonstrate his genius, though he later destroys those plans to prevent harm.
