Description
Hideki Saji is a university junior of the protagonist Souichi Negishi. Unlike Negishi, who is secretly the frontman of the death metal band Detroit Metal City, Saji has a sincere and gentle personality and a genuine passion for light, cheerful pop music. He looks up to Negishi as a senior who shares his taste in music and admires his skill at playing the guitar and singing.
Saji forms his own indie pop band called Tetra Port Melonti and actively performs street lives in the Shimokitazawa area. His primary motivation is to pursue his love for pop music, which stands in stark contrast to the aggressive death metal sound of Detroit Metal City. He does not harbor any hatred for DMC and can appreciate its unique worldview from a distance.
In the story, Saji serves as a reflection of Negishi's suppressed pop music aspirations. He reunites with Negishi after recognizing him at a street performance, though Negishi flees out of embarrassment. Later, on a late-night television program, he encounters Johannes Krauser II, Negishi's demonic stage persona. In a public restroom, Krauser gives Saji some surprisingly kind advice to help him relax. As a result, Saji develops a positive impression of Krauser, thinking he is a very nice person with a similar aura to the respected senior from his university days, completely unaware that they are the same person.
This misunderstanding sets up a recurring pattern in their relationship. Every time Saji appears, he is brutally assaulted by Krauser II for no apparent reason. After the Death Records CEO provokes a broadcast producer, all members of Tetra Port Melonti are attacked by DMC members, which leads to the band's disbandment. He later attempts to regroup with his former bandmates under the new name TMT, only for Krauser II to mistake Saji for Krauser I and assault them all over again. His final appearance has him being compressed by a packing machine overturned by Krauser II.
Saji has notable musical abilities as a guitarist and songwriter for his pop band. He also demonstrates considerable talent as a pop musician, which contrasts sharply with Negishi's forced success in metal. Despite his consistently unfortunate encounters with the protagonist's alter ego, he remains a genuinely good-natured character who never learns the truth about Krauser's identity. The character's design and name are modeled after the real-life Japanese musician Hideki Kaji, who contributed music to the anime adaptation.
