Description
Dark Keroro is the primary antagonist of the third theatrical film in the series. He is a clone of the series protagonist, Keroro, created from a sample of DNA taken from the original Keronian's Kero Ball. This DNA was used to grow him from a newly discovered Kiruru unit located in the mountain city of Machu Picchu in Peru. He leads his own invasion unit, the Dark Keroro Platoon, which includes his subordinates Shivava, Doruru, and Miruru.
In terms of appearance, Dark Keroro is a dark-colored mirror image of his genetic template. His skin is a dark green, while his secondary skin color is pure black, contrasting with the original's lighter tones. He has red pupils, black stripes under his eyes, and possesses sharp fangs. His Keronian hat is gray, featuring a pure black star insignia, and he wears a torn red cape, which gives him a somewhat vampiric or sinister appearance. By the end of the film, following his redemption, his eyes turn black and his cape disappears, replaced by a simple red neck scarf.
Personality-wise, Dark Keroro is everything the original Keroro is not. While Keroro is often lazy, flippant, and obsessed with building Gundam models, Dark Keroro is a much more serious, competent, and ruthless invader. He is characterized as being calm, collected, and coldly efficient, possessing a high degree of intelligence and strategic thinking. His demeanor contrasts sharply with Keroro's chaotic nature, allowing him to successfully conquer Pekopon (the Keronian name for Earth) in a mere two minutes using a mind control device. He is also extremely arrogant and speaks in a formal, commanding manner, referring to himself as ware (我, a formal first-person pronoun) and to others as kisama (貴様), a blunt and disrespectful way of saying "you". Unlike Keroro, he has no interest in Earth's hobbies or culture, viewing Pekoponians with disdain.
Dark Keroro's motivations are initially centered on completing a perfect and efficient invasion of Earth to prove his superiority over the original Keroro. He demonstrates an unusual and significant interest in the friendship between Keroro and the human boy Fuyuki Hinata, actively seeking to destroy their bond as a means to weaken his counterpart. This focus on their relationship becomes a key part of the narrative conflict. After his defeat, his motivations change. Ridding himself of his malevolent intentions, he decides to leave Earth and travel into space to conquer a different planet. In a final scene that parodies the beginning of the series, his ship is confronted by alien look-alikes of Fuyuki and Natsumi Hinata.
The character's role in the story is to serve as a dark rival and existential threat to Keroro and his platoon. He directly challenges Keroro's identity as an invader and his personal connections on Earth. His key relationships are primarily antagonistic. He leads his own platoon, commanding Shivava, Doruru, and Miruru. While his relationship with the first two is purely professional, his connection with Miruru is more complex, as she ultimately sacrifices herself to seal the Kiruru half of his being, thereby ending his violent ambitions. His central dynamic is with his original, Keroro, representing the path of a cold, efficient invader in contrast to one who has become integrated with and fond of the planet he was sent to conquer.
Dark Keroro undergoes a clear development arc within the film. Starting as a purely malevolent being determined to conquer and destroy, he is ultimately defeated. The turning point is Miruru's sacrifice, which seals his destructive half. This act allows him to see the positive influence Keroro has had on Earth. He comes to a realization that Keroro has already achieved a form of invasion through the bonds of friendship and love he has formed with the Hinata family and others, leading to his redemption. Freed from his violent nature, he departs for space to seek his own path, implying a newfound purpose beyond simple destruction.
Dark Keroro possesses several notable abilities that make him a far more formidable threat than the original. His intellect and tactical acumen are his greatest weapons, allowing him to execute a flawless planetary invasion in minutes using advanced technology like a planet-wide mind control device. He commands a gigantic spaceship equipped with an anti-barrier that can shroud a city in darkness. His ultimate weapon is a massive, highly improved version of the Keroro Robot, so large that his command ship attaches to its back like a small pair of wings. While he is a clone, he is explicitly described as a much more "improved" and capable invader than the original Keroro in nearly every respect, being smarter, more serious, and more powerful.
