Mutsuko Hoshino is a young woman from a rural area who arrives in Tokyo in 1958 to begin her first job at Suzuki Auto, a small auto repair shop in the Yuhi district. Initially disappointed because she had expected a large company, she quickly becomes an integral part of the Suzuki household. In the sequel set in spring 1959, Mutsuko has fully learned her role as an apprentice mechanic and has grown comfortable with her work and the family. She welcomes Mika, a relative's daughter who temporarily moves in, with kindness, helping the girl adjust to a simpler lifestyle.
