Description
Master Muten, also known as the Turtle Hermit, is a central character in the 1991 Taiwanese live‑action adaptation Dragon Ball: The Magic Begins. In this film, he is portrayed as an elderly, bald martial arts master with a thick beard and signature sunglasses, usually seen in beach‑style clothing or a martial arts suit. His background aligns with that of the original manga: he is a centuries‑old sage who studied under the great Master Mutaito and is the creator of the Kamehameha wave. Within the story, Master Muten serves as the wise mentor to the young heroes, particularly Son Goku, whom he guides alongside Bulma, Yamcha, and Oolong. His personality balances profound wisdom with a comically lecherous nature, as he frequently makes flirtatious remarks toward female characters such as Bulma. Despite these eccentricities, he is deeply dedicated to his students and to protecting the world from evil. His primary motivation in the film is to stop the alien King Horn from collecting the seven Dragon Balls and gaining ultimate power. Master Muten actively joins the group’s quest, offering martial arts instruction and strategic advice. He shares a close bond with Goku, acting as a surrogate grandfather figure, and he also interacts with the Ox‑King (here called the Bull Demon King) and Gohan. His notable abilities include immense physical strength, the devastating Kamehameha wave, and a technique called the Mafuba, which he employs in critical moments. While the film only covers a single adventure, Master Muten’s role as the foundational mentor remains unchanged, and his combination of playful foolishness and serious heroism defines his contribution to the story.
