Description
Occho, whose real name is Choji Ochiai, is a central character in 20th Century Boys. He is also known by the nickname Otcho and, in his adult years, by the alias Shogun. As a boy, he was one of Kenji Endo's closest friends and served as a co-leader of their childhood group. He was responsible for designing the symbol that the group adopted as its mark, a detail that becomes highly significant later, because the same symbol is eventually claimed by the organization called Friend.
As a child, Occho was just as impulsive and hot-headed as Kenji. The two boys were inseparable and constantly competed with each other to see who was better, and this rivalry helped define their friendship. During these early years, he was also remembered by a nickname referring to his large eyes.
Occho's adult life is marked by loss. He becomes a salaryman, but after the death of his son and the collapse of his family life, he abandons Japan and disappears into Southeast Asia, spending time in places such as Tibet and Thailand. During this period he becomes involved in the dealings of the Friend organization. Operating under the alias Shogun, he takes on dangerous work, including rescuing kidnapped tourists, and keeps himself in prime physical shape, escaping certain death on numerous occasions. When a local drug boss allied with Friend begins hunting him, he receives a plea from Kenji for help and decides to return to Japan, rejoining the fight on the eve of the catastrophe that Friend has planned for the end of the year 2000.
