Description
Chieko Makino is the mother of the protagonist, Tsukushi Makino, in the anime Hana Yori Dango 2 [Returns]. She is a middle-aged woman with brown hair cut in a bob style and noticeable wrinkles under her eyes, which reflect a life filled with financial worries. Her primary driving force is an intense, often overwhelming desire for financial security and social advancement, not just for herself but for her entire family, including her husband Haruo (or Yasukichi in some sources) and her young son Susumu.
Chieko's personality is characterized by her pragmatic and sometimes opportunistic nature. Disappointed by her husband's lack of career success and steady income, she shifts her ambitions onto her daughter, Tsukushi. She is the one who forcefully pushes Tsukushi to enroll at the prestigious Eitoku Academy, a school for the ultra-wealthy, not out of concern for her daughter's education, but to avoid the shame of falling behind the children of her husband's coworkers. Her voice is loud and her opinions are freely given, often manifesting as nagging or shouting at her husband and children about money and prospects.
In the story, Chieko serves as a source of comedic relief as well as a significant external pressure on Tsukushi. She is a practical, lower-middle-class woman who sees the wealthy students at Eitoku as potential tickets out of her family's financial struggles. Upon learning that the heir to the Domyoji fortune, Tsukasa, is interested in her daughter, Chieko is ecstatic and relentlessly pushes Tsukushi toward him, going so far as to force her to attend Tsukasa's party under threat of being disowned. Her motivations are transparently materialistic; she dreams of Tsukushi marrying a rich heir to secure the family's future. This is further illustrated when Tsukasa's mother, Kaede, offers the family fifty million yen to give up Tsukasa. While Chieko dramatically refuses the money by pouring salt on Kaede's head, her objection is not born of principle but of greed. She later reveals a scheme to Tsukushi, explaining they should refuse the small payout in favor of eventually claiming the entire Domyoji fortune after the parents die.
Chieko's key relationships revolve around her family. Her relationship with her husband is strained by their poverty, and she frequently laments his lack of a promotion. Her relationship with Tsukushi is a central dynamic of the anime. While she clearly loves her daughter, her love is often expressed through forceful actions and financial expectations, rarely taking Tsukushi's true feelings into account. Despite her scheming and selfishness, she shows moments of genuine concern, such as when she watches over a sick or injured Tsukushi in the hospital.
Throughout the series, and specifically in Hana Yori Dango 2 [Returns], Chieko's character is less about dramatic personal development and more about providing a consistent, grounding presence from Tsukushi's home life. She remains focused on the goal of marrying her daughter into wealth. One notable shift in the family's circumstances occurs when her husband loses his job, forcing the family to move to a cheaper apartment and eventually accept a live-in job in the countryside. Even then, her concern remains tied to Tsukushi's romantic progress, worrying that her absence will hinder her daughter’s chance to marry Tsukasa. Chieko does not possess any physical or intellectual abilities of note; her only "notable ability" is her relentless and vocal persistence in pursuing her family's financial and social elevation.
