Description
In the anime Hana Yori Dango 2 [Returns], Junpei Oribe is a first-year student at the prestigious Eitoku Academy, the same school attended by Tsukushi Makino and the F4. He is a young man who presents a dual identity to the world. At school, he adopts a persona of an unassuming and somewhat nerdy boy, wearing glasses and keeping a low profile. This appearance hides his other occupation as a professional model, a secret that gradually comes to light.
Personality wise, Junpei initially comes across as friendly, supportive, and kind. He approaches Tsukushi with a genuine-seeming desire for friendship, making him stand out in the often hostile environment of Eitoku. He expresses admiration for her strong-willed and independent nature, comparing her to historical figures like Joan of Arc. This positive attention offers Tsukushi a respite from the bullying she frequently endures, and she is grateful for his companionship. However, this pleasant facade masks a deep-seated bitterness and a capacity for calculated cruelty. His true personality is revealed to be driven by a grudge, showing a manipulative and vengeful side.
Junpei’s primary motivation is revenge against Tsukasa Domyouji. He holds a long-standing grudge because Tsukasa previously beat up someone close to him, presumably an older brother. Unable to confront Tsukasa directly due to the latter's power and status, Junpei devises a plan to hurt him by targeting the person Tsukasa loves: Tsukushi. His entire approach to Tsukushi, from their friendship to the incident with the magazine, is a deliberate strategy to get close to her and ultimately use her as bait in his scheme for payback.
His role in the story is that of an antagonist and a catalyst. He serves as a significant obstacle in the early part of the season, creating a rift and misunderstanding between the two main characters. By orchestrating the publication of a magazine cover featuring himself and Tsukushi, he successfully provokes jealousy and confusion. He is also revealed to be the one who arranged for a second red note, a symbol of an F4 declaration of ostracism, to be placed in Tsukushi's locker, framing Tsukasa and furthering the emotional distance between them. His actions push Tsukushi to travel to New York to confront Tsukasa, setting the main plot of the season in motion.
Junpei’s key relationships are primarily with Tsukushi Makino and Tsukasa Domyouji. His connection to Tsukushi is built on a foundation of deception; he feigns friendship and romantic interest to manipulate her. His relationship with Tsukasa is one of pure antagonism, driven by a desire for revenge for a past wrong. There is no direct bond between them, only the animosity from the past incident and Junpei’s current plotting. Additionally, his scheme brings him into direct conflict with other main characters like Rui Hanazawa and Tsubaki Domyouji, who ultimately intervene to protect Tsukushi from him.
Junpei undergoes a definitive, negative development arc. He transitions from a seemingly sympathetic new friend to a revealed antagonist whose true motives are exposed. After he kidnaps Tsukushi, his plan unravels. Tsubaki Domyouji, Tsukasa's sister, arrives to rescue Tsukushi, thwarting his revenge. Following this failure, Rui Hanazawa forces Junpei to take full responsibility for his actions. This results in his withdrawal from Eitoku Academy. In his final appearance, he expresses a bitter belief that Tsukushi would be happier with Rui instead of Tsukasa, but she rejects his unsolicited opinion about her own happiness, showing that his attempt to control the narrative around her has failed completely.
Junpei does not possess any physical or combative abilities in the way the F4 members do. His most notable skill is his ability to deceive and manipulate. He is adept at creating and maintaining a false persona, allowing him to infiltrate Tsukushi’s trust. His career as a model is a practical ability that he exploits to carry out his central act of provocation, the magazine photo shoot. His true power lies in his strategic cunning, using psychological manipulation rather than brute force to try and achieve his goals.
