Description
The character Haruhiko Miura appears in the 2007 live-action film adaptation of GeGeGe no Kitaro, portrayed by actor Go Riju. He is the father of the human siblings Kenta and Mika Miura, who become central to the film's conflict after coming into possession of a dangerous, powerful stone known as the Demon Stone. Haruhiko is introduced as a man facing significant personal and economic hardship. The film establishes that he is a widower, having lost his wife, and is currently unemployed, struggling to provide for his two children. This financial desperation becomes a key driver of his actions early in the story. His primary motivation is the welfare of his family. In a moment of despair, he considers pawning his deceased wife's wedding ring to get money to care for Kenta and Mika, an act that highlights his love for them but also his profound sense of helplessness. His situation is further complicated when he steals the Demon Stone from an emporium, mistakenly believing it to be a simple, valuable gem that can solve his money problems. This theft, born of desperation, is the incident that sets the plot in motion, as the stone's powerful and dangerous owners, the fox spirits, come to reclaim it, placing his entire family in grave danger.

In the story, Haruhiko Miura serves as a representation of the human world in distress. Unlike the yokai world inhabited by the protagonist Kitaro, Haruhiko is an ordinary man caught in extraordinary circumstances. His role is not as a hero or fighter but as a catalyst and a victim of the supernatural conflict. His actions, specifically the theft of the stone, inadvertently create the crisis that Kitaro must resolve, making him a crucial figure in the narrative's inciting incident. The film explores his relationship with his children, particularly his son Kenta, who is young and frightened by the supernatural events plaguing their apartment. While his daughter Mika takes on a protective, almost maternal role over her younger brother after their mother's death, Haruhiko is shown as a struggling but caring father who wants to keep his family together, even if his methods are misguided and dangerous. He does not possess any notable supernatural abilities, combat skills, or magical powers. His character arc is grounded in reality, focused on redemption and protecting his family from a threat he unintentionally unleashed. Development for Haruhiko centers on taking responsibility for his actions. He must confront the consequences of his desperate theft and work to protect his children from the very dangers his poor decision invited into their lives.
