Description
Eikichi Onizuka, as he appears in Shonan Junai Gumi and Bad Company, is a sixteen-year-old student and the central figure of the story. During the events of Bad Company, which depict his first year of high school, he is fourteen years old. Standing at 168 centimeters (approximately 5 feet 6 inches) tall and weighing 55 kilograms, Onizuka is a physically distinctive presence on the streets of Shonan. He is known for his bleached blond hair, which often shows dark roots, and he is rarely seen without a cigarette, a pair of earrings, and a cocky attitude. His typical attire consists of loose-fitting, flashy clothing, marking him as a quintessential Yankee, or Japanese delinquent.
Onizuka’s background is that of a hardened juvenile delinquent who has been written off by society. His own teachers had no faith in him, frequently calling him trash and a criminal, which led him to internalize this identity. Despite this, he possesses an unshakeable, often overconfident, belief in his own abilities. His personality is a volatile mix of violent temper, street smarts, and a surprisingly simple-minded obsession with two things: fighting and losing his virginity. He is lecherous, vulgar, and unashamed of his desires, often putting on a cool, gentlemanly facade to attract girls, only for his true, hormone-driven nature to break through. Much of his motivation throughout his teen years is driven by a quest to become popular with women and to finally achieve sexual experience.
His role in the story is defined by his legendary partnership with his best friend, Ryuji Danma. Their explosive friendship begins when Ryuji transfers to Onizuka’s class and is initially terrified by Onizuka’s ferocious gaze. After a violent start, they form an unbreakable bond. Together, after defeating a biker gang that stole Onizuka’s restored motorcycle, they earn the friendship of the Midnight Angels, the most powerful biker gang in the city. It is their leader who baptizes the duo as the Onibaku, a portmanteau of Onizuka’s Oni, meaning demon, and Danma’s Baku, meaning explosion. They become known as a demonic explosion, feared and respected throughout Shonan for their strength and ferocity. While Onizuka is initially not fond of the name, he eventually comes to embrace it as a symbol of the happiest period of his life. The duo’s adventures involve defending their territory, protecting friends, and getting into absurd situations, all while maintaining their reputation as Shonan’s strongest fighters.
Key relationships are central to Onizuka’s development. Ryuji Danma is not simply a sidekick but an equal partner and the closest person in Onizuka’s life. Unlike Onizuka, Ryuji is more composed and successful with women, often serving as a foil to Onizuka’s manic energy. Their brotherhood is founded on mutual respect built through countless battles. Furthermore, Onizuka develops a network of former rivals who become allies, drawn to his unique sense of loyalty and his refusal to ever back down from a fight. His gang eventually expands far beyond just the two of them, growing to dozens of members who unite under the Onibaku flag across the Kanagawa region.
His notable abilities are primarily physical. Onizuka is a terrifyingly effective street fighter with what many describe as near-superhuman strength and durability. He has been shown performing incredible feats, such as breaking bamboo swords and bowling balls with his bare hands, surviving gunshot wounds, and tolerating severe fractures for hours without showing signs of weakness. He is also a skilled motorcyclist who has been riding since his early teens, and he serves as captain of his school’s karate team, drastically elevating its prestige. Despite his poor reputation in academic circles, Onizuka possesses a cunning, streetwise intelligence, allowing him to plan and execute unexpected strategies against his enemies. However, his most defining ability is his overwhelming charisma and tenacity, which allow him to turn former enemies into loyal friends and command respect from virtually everyone he encounters in the Shonan underworld.
